Summer Civics & Swing States

Welcome! This upcoming election is arguably the most important election of the lifetimes of young people around the world in relation to racial justice and climate change, and the communities most impacted by it--the same communities most impacted by COVID-19 and by racism and white supremacy in America. So, let's get out the vote!

This site serves as the home base for all content related to the Summer Civics & Swing States program. (Communications and calendar are done through Canvas.)

Program Objectives

  • Get excited about engaging in the 2020 election! And gain experience doing so!

  • Explore our personal identities and histories and how they influence our understanding of and engagement in democracy in the US.

  • Develop a basic understanding of:

    • How the 2020 election will impact issues you care about (e.g., climate change, racial justice);

    • How your local, state, and national governments work, who your elected officials are and how to influence them;

    • Voter demographics in the US, voter suppression, disenfranchisement, and voter registration efforts;

    • Which swing states (states that could possibly be won by either democrats or republicans in an election) are in play for the 2020 election and why;

    • How to be an effective volunteer with an elections-oriented organization.

  • Spend time this summer meaningfully engaging in the November 2020 election by volunteering for a campaign or election-oriented organization, focused on a particular swing state or a local swing election.
