Q: What is the New York State Seal of Civic Readiness?

A: The New York State Seal of Civic Readiness is a formal recognition of students who have fulfilled the criteria for demonstrating proficiency in civic knowledge and the criteria for civic participation. By fulfilling this criteria students are eligible for a stand-alone diploma seal.


Q: What are the goals of the Seal of Civic Readiness?

A: The intent of the Seal of Civic Readiness is to

  • empower all students to make informed decisions for the public good as members of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world

  • facilitate the development of civic competencies, which are needed for a democratic society to flourish

  • identify and address problems in their community or school community

  • learn how to demonstrate respect for the rights of others

  • respectfully disagree with other viewpoints

  • provide evidence for a counterargument


Q: Who can participate?

A: Students will begin to earn points towards the Seal of Civic Readiness beginning in 8th Grade and through their senior year as they participate in and fulfill the criteria for the Seal of Civic Readiness Capstone Project.


Q: What are the pathways to achieving the seal?

A: Students must earn a total of 6 points, with at least 2 points which demonstrated proficiency in civic knowledge and at least 2 points which demonstrate civic participation.


Q: Who decides is a student earns the Seal of Civic Readiness?

A: The North Salem Seal of Civic Readiness Committee made up of Social Studies teachers, administrators and our guidance counselors. After a student has completed the criteria and his/her work has been evaluated in accordance with NYSED requirements a recommendation will be made for the student to obtain the Seal.


Q: Is there a cost associated with the Seal?

A: No, a fee is not charged to students who participate in the Seal of Civic Readiness.


Q: Is the Seal of Civic Readiness available to students with an Individualized Education Plan or 504?

A: Yes, All accommodations listed on the students IEP or 504, including assessments and classroom accommodations are applicable.
