TEXTILES AND DESIGN
In this ½ credit course, students will study the historical and cultural influences on fashion and wardrobe planning to maximize personal appearance and style, the evolution of textiles, the application of current sewing techniques and equipment, and smart consumer habits. Many hands-on activities will encourage student creativity and application of the elements of design. Throughout the course, career opportunities and the training needed for each are presented. This course along with the Housing and Environment course satisfies the NYSED Art graduation requirement.
HOUSING & ENVIRONMENT
In this ½ credit course, students will learn the elements and principles of design related to architecture, furniture styles, and interior design. Factors to consider when making housing decisions associated with the family unit, lifestyles, and stages in the family cycle, floor plans, energy conservation, and household equipment are emphasized throughout the semester. Career descriptions related to housing and interior design are explored. This course along with Textiles and Design courses satisfies the NYSED Art graduation requirements.
FOOD AND NUTRITION
In this ½ credit course, students will develop an understanding of the foundations of food preparation, nutrition, and meal planning, through a variety of hands-on experiences. This course emphasizes the planning, purchasing, preparation, serving, and evaluation of a wide variety of foods. Dietary guidelines promoting long-term wellness are stressed throughout the semester. Job descriptions for culinary and nutrition-related careers are also studied from the aspect of education, skills, and abilities expected in the workplace.
FOOD PREPARATION AND NUTRITION
This ½ credit course is intended as a "second level" foods and nutrition course: a follow-up to the concepts studied in FOOD AND NUTRITION, with a concentration on the preparation of nutritious food products. Dietary Guidelines for Americans are emphasized. Careers in the fields of nutrition and food will also be covered.
CHILD AND FAMILY DEVELOPMENT I
This ½ unit course will enable students to analyze how children develop including looking at significant theories into the development of human beings. This class touches on prenatal care, birth through school age, including the physical, social, emotional & intellectual development of the infant/child. Students will also explore the topics of health and safety, effective parenting skills, and analyzing common problems in childhood.
CHILD AND FAMILY DEVELOPMENT II
This ½ unit course explores the understanding of oneself throughout adolescence and into young adulthood. In this class, we learn & role-play practical skills relating to communication and sharpening social skills. These skills help to enable one to develop and maintain healthy relationships both inside and outside of the family. Gender and culture differences are also studied and analyzed to help strengthen and maintain relationships. Practical hands-on experience will be provided by caring for a simulated infant.
