Accommodations are available for Civil Service exams. Individuals taking a Civil Service exam will submit an application. On this application there is a space to make note of accommodations you will need. Those accommodations need to be set up at least 2 weeks prior to the exam. I suggest contacting the Civil Services office to follow up after submitting an application. Kimberly Schneider is the current contact person. The phone number is - (631) 853-5500
A list of current exams can be found here - https://apps2.suffolkcountyny.gov/civilservice/efile/default.aspx
Each exam has information about the requirements when you click on them. Some mention if accommodations can be used in the description. They all mention the requirements.
Civil Service programs for individuals with disabilities -
55-a program - https://suffolkcountyny.gov/Portals/0/formsdocs/civilservice/55aEmploymentProgramforPeoplewithDisabilities.pdf
55a - understanding is that the employer is willing to hire individual without exam. There is a form from Civil Service that goes to ACCES-VR if an individual is hired.
Individuals with disabilities should connect to ACCES-VR to assist in looking into this.
NY Civil Service also has a program that waives the civil service examination requirement for Individuals with Disabilities to be able to apply for and obtain entry level employment (that is otherwise filled through an open-competitive examination). If the student has the skills to perform the civil service job, and they qualify for 55b, they do not have to sit for the competitive exam in order to interview and hopefully be appointed to the position.
Section 55-b of the New York State Civil Service Law authorizes the New York State Civil Service Commission to designate up to 1,200 positions normally filled through competitive examination to be filled through the appointment of qualified persons with disabilities. In general, an entry-level position that is filled only through an open-competitive examination (one open to the public) may be used for a 55-b.
No initial written examination is required for appointment. To qualify for either program, you must first submit a formal application. A medical evaluation may be necessary for program certification.
