What is Small Group Counseling?
School counselors offer a variety of small groups to students who may benefit from spending some extra time developing academic, social, or emotional skills along with their peers. Students work in small groups with other students who are coping with similar life situations. Students work together to explore their ideas, attitudes, feelings, and behaviors as it relates to personal development and progress in school. Small group counseling teaches skills and strategies to students that enhance their ability to succeed academically and socially as they encounter different situations through adeolscence.
Groups are developed based on reviewing school-wide data and referrals from parents, teachers, and peers. Students and teachers will be given pre and post test. Groups are composed of 4-6 students. Students usually meet once a week during non-core instruction times such as reading. Groups will meet 4-8 weeks based on the needs of the group and curriculum used.
Students can be refered by a teacher, parent, or themselves based on an individual counseling session. Different groups will be offered throughout the year based off student and building needs. If you have a child that would be a good fit for a group, please reach out.
