Phoenix Presents: Math Department Spotlight

Coordinator Joseph Romanelli discusses program specifics and focus

"The math department at NHHS emphasizes computational skills, problem-solving techniques, and mathematical structure. The students learn skills and concepts, and practice analytical and critical thinking throughout each one of their courses.

The HS graduation requirement is three credits of math and an extra three credits of stem classes, while every course the math department offers counts as a stem credit. The department offers a variety of AP and college level courses including AP Pre Calculus, AP/UCONN Calculus, AP Statistics, UCONN Discrete Mathematics and SCSU College Algebra.

The math department also is dedicated to improving the SAT scores through updated curriculum and dedicated class time for SAT practice. All juniors are also offered the opportunity to take an SAT Prep class to better prepare them for the exam. "

Now let's meet the teachers who make it happen...

Mr. Joseph Romanelli

Math Department Coordinator and Head NHHS Baseball Coach

Joseph Romanelli has been the 6-12 Math Coordinator at North Haven for three years. Before coming to North Haven, he taught at the New Haven Engineering Science University Magnet School for eight years. As for schooling, Romanelli earned his Undergraduate degree and Masters degree at the University of New Haven in Mathematics, then attended Southern Connecticut State University for his 6th year degree in educational leadership. While at the University of New Haven, Romanelli played baseball for four years. After graduating, he coached for Notre Dame High School, and for a travel organization. Romanelli is now coaching North Haven High School's baseball team, in addition to being the Math Coordinator. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife, a teacher at the middle school, and two kids, Kylie and Luca.

Jeffrey Woytowich earned his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology at UCONN, then worked towards his teaching degree and Masters in Holistic Thinking at SCSU. Woytowich has been teaching for almost twenty years and has been working at NNHS since 2010. Currently, he teaches Algebra II and Calculus. He enjoys working with students to exemplify that learning can be fun, it just, "...takes hard work, perseverance, and willingness to try new things. Math is like any other skill, if you put enough effort and practice into it, anyone can succeed." Outside of school, Woytowich enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters. Some of his favorite activities include swimming, camping, skiing, golfing, and watching UCONN basketball games.

Mr. Jeffrey Woytowich

Ms. Lisa Zarcone

Lisa Zarcone attended Quinnipiac University with the intent of earning her law degree, but later realized she had a passion for teaching. Zarcone always wanted, "...to do something with my life in the service of others," and found that earning her teaching degree would allow her "...to make a difference in the lives of children, the way that my teachers made a positive impact on my life." After completing her student teaching at the North Haven Middle School, Zarcone was hired as an 8th grade math teacher in Ansonia, Connecticut. After five years, she was hired at our high school and has been teaching Algebra for the past 10 years.  Zarcone has also returned to her college, Quinnipiac University, to teach courses in the Math Department. Outside of school, she loves spending time with her family and friends, cooking, going to concerts, doing escape rooms, and walking her dog!

Stephanie Gaulin has taught almost every subject of the math curriculum at North Haven High School. This year, she teaches L3 PreCalculus, L2 Geometry, as well as Applied Geometry. Gaulin began her pursuit of mathematics at Eastern Connecticut State University where she earned a Bachelor's of Science in Mathematics. She then attended the University of New England to work for her Master's of Science in Education. Gaulin is the perfect representation of having a work-life balance, something she is very proud of.  While teaching full time, Gaulin also raises two children and is currently still attending school in order to earn her 6th year degree. Outside of the classroom, she enjoys supporting the Boston Red Sox and the Men's UConn Basketball team. Her and her husband even had their engagement photos taken at Fenway park! In her free time, Gaulin enjoys spending time with her husband and daughters. She is also a part of a book club in which she is trying to reach a goal of 25 books per year!

Ms. Stephanie Gaulin

Ms. Jacqueline Jones

Jacqueline Jones is known for her debuts on the NHGTV announcements, but her life on the screen started much earlier. When she was younger, Jones modeled a few spring outfits on the Today Show! Currently, she teaches Geometry, Algebra II, College Algebra, and Math Lab. She attended UConn and Southern for her undergraduate, as well as the University of New Haven for graduate school. Jones was born in the Bronx, hence her love for the Yankees and the New York Giants. When she is not teaching,  Jones enjoys watching the Olympics and the World Cup, in addition to playing volleyball and taking neighborhood walks with her family. Jones is most proud of the support system she had created with family and friends. She compares relationships to plants, saying "You need to continuously take care of them. I try to be my favorite version of myself every day for my husband and sons-its not always the "best' because this isn't always realistic. Being my "favorite version," means I am happy with my choices and actions day in and day out." This positive attitude caries into her work life where Jones has made genuine friendships within her department - for that she is grateful. Outside of school, she enjoys reading, going on family vacations, and having lunch with friends.

Daniel Hughes was not always a math teacher. Before his time at North Haven, he was in the Computer Science field. He attended UConn to get a bachelors degree in Computer Science, and worked for 5 years as a Software Analyst. Eventually, Hughes realized he needed a change. He decided to pursue a teaching career. Hughes enrolled in a program called the Alternate Route to Certification, provided by the State of Connecticut. After, he attended the University of Saint Joseph and received his Masters in Educational Technology. Soon after, he got a job at The Sound School, which he said solidified his passion for teaching. Eventually, a position for a Computer Science/Math teacher at North Haven High School opened up. Hughes took the job and has been working here ever since. Now, he teaches Algebra II, Intro to Computer Science, AP Computer Science Principles, and AP Computer Science. Hughes also has many hobbies. His favorite sports team is the UConn Huskies, specifically their incredible basketball program. Outside of school he loves anything to do with exercise and endurance. Hughes also has a creative side, as he likes to create music as well. He is most proud of his ability to follow his instinct when he realized that Computer Science was not for him. He is glad that he put all his effort into his dreams, and he makes sure to give the same all-out effort when teaching.

Mr. Daniel Hughes

Ms. Jennifer Nolan

Jennifer Nolan teaches Geometry, Algebra II, as well as PreCalculus at North Haven High School.  She earned her undergraduate at Baylor University in Texas, then worked for her Masters and 6th year at Southern Connecticut State University. During high school and college, Nolan was a dancer and participated in the marching band. Outside of the classroom, she enjoys golf, doing arts and crafts, as well as spending time with her kids, a three and six year old. Nolan is most proud of her consistent workmanship. She graduated high school at the top of her class, received an academic scholarship to Baylor, and has now been teaching for almost 20 years. Each day, Nolan works to create a positive environment in which her students are able to thrive and become the best version of themselves.

John Snow attended Southern Connecticut State University to earn his Masters, then went to Albertus Magnus College where he earned his Bachelor's and 2nd Masters. Snow has been teaching for 10 years. Currently, he teaches Pre-Algebra and Algebra II. Outside of school, Snow remains very active not only coaching, but also running in his free time. He coaches cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, and is a marathon/ultra-marathon runner. He is most proud of having accomplished the Boston, New York, and Chicago Marathon. When he is not running, Snow enjoys hiking with his wife, trail running, and reading.

Mr. John Snow

Ms. Katie Moore

This is Katie Moore's first year of teaching at North Haven High School! She is currently teaching Algebra I, levels one and two, in addition to Math Lab. Moore attended Stony Brook University to earn her undergraduate in Economics, then worked for her Masters in Secondary Mathematics Education at Sacred Heart University. Moore's passion for teaching began from her role as a wrestling coach where she realized her love for teaching others about subjects she enjoys. Outside of school, Moore continues to coach wrestling, spends time with her family and friends, and enjoys taking her dog on walks. Moore's favorite part of working at North Haven High is the positive, inclusive community our school had created with its staff and students!

Larissa Opramolla graduated from Fairfield University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance. She started working in the fundraising office at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, but she quickly realized she wanted to teach. Opramolla enrolled in Southern Connecticut State University where she got a teaching degree in Math Education. She started her teaching career at Sacred Heart Academy in Hamden, Connecticut. After three years, an opening for a Math teacher at NHHS, her alma mater, came up and she got the job. Opramolla has been teaching at North Haven since 1997. Throughout her years, she has taught  Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, PreCalculus, and Statistics. Because of the close-knit community that Opramolla loves, she chose to raise her own family here after she got married. Outside of school, Opramolla enjoys watching sports. Her favorite teams are the Men's and Women's UConn Basketball teams, and the North Haven High School Football team. She also roots for the New York Jets, as her husband and son are super fans. Opramolla has many other hobbies as well. She enjoys cooking, planning vacations, and hosting summer pool parties. While she is very passionate about teaching, she is also very proud of her family. She says her three children were fortunate enough to graduate from North Haven High School, and she is grateful for the impact her children's teachers have had on their lives.

Ms. Larissa Opramolla

Mr. Dominic Esposito

Dominic Esposito attended Central Connecticut State University for his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. There he also majored in Mathematics, and attained his Master of Science Degree in Educational Technology. Before North Haven, Esposito taught in Cromwell, Connecticut, where he taught Algebra I and Pre-Algebra to 6th graders. He taught for one year in his hometown of Newington, Connecticut, but this was cut short with the pandemic. During this time he and his wife moved to central Connecticut, and he got a job teaching 7th and 8th graders at North Branford. While he was there, a job opened up at North Haven High School. Esposito applied, interviewed, and performed a demo lesson before he was awarded the job. Currently he teaches Algebra II and Geometry. In his free time he enjoys watching sports. His favorite teams to root for are the Boston Bruins and the New England Patriots. Esposito's hobbies include changing diapers, baking the ultimate chocolate chip cookies, and riding his motorcycle. Out of all the amazing things he has accomplished, he is very proud of the life he and his wife have built for his young and growing family.

Kevin Liftig attended University of Connecticut, earning both his undergraduate and masters degrees while there. Currently, he teaches five courses in North Haven High School, consisting of AP/UConn Calculus, Algebra 2, SAT Prep, UConn Discrete Math (Math in Society), and Math Lab Support Classes. Liftig is proud of his accomplishment of being a triple major with an Honors Thesis in Mathematics, Economics, and History. Rather than having much interest in sports, he enjoys theater and assists in the production of the North Haven High School musical each year! Along with theater, he also enjoys choir and passing time through playing laptop games.

Mr. Kevin Liftig

Mr. John Cornelius

John Cornelius graduated from Bryant University with an undergraduate degree in Applied Actuarial Mathematics, and later went back to school to earn his Masters in Teaching at Sacred Heart University. Prior to teaching at North Haven High School, Cornelius taught in New Haven, where he became the lead math teacher after only three years of teaching there! At New Haven he developed several new classes, such as a senior seminar course, as well as created a financial skills game. Currently, he teaches both Statistics and AP Statistics at North Haven High School. While he was a student, he recalls many moments that he feels pride in, such as when he won a debate tournament while in high school and when he had his own radio show while attending college. Outside of the classroom Cornelius enjoys tabletop role-playing game development, art, theology, ancient history, and reading fantasy literature and comics.

Ms. Haley Langevin

Haley Langevin began teaching Algebra 1, Applied Algebra 1, and Geometry this past fall. After enjoying her experience at NHHS last year as an intern and student teacher, she was pleased to be hired as a full-time staff member. Originally from New York, Langevin moved to CT for college. She earned a Bachelors in Mathematics and Masters in Education, from Quinnipiac University, where she was the recipient of the Fickes Award in Mathematics. Growing up, Langevin spent a lot of time dancing. She started lessons at the age of three and continued to perform throughout college. Langevin enjoys spending time with friends and family, reading, and exploring nature.                                                           Welcome to NHHS!
