NHHS Happily Welcomes Two New Assistant Principals

Kathryn Russo
"It’s an honor to be your new assistant principal at North Haven High School and continue to be a part of this wonderful community of students, families, faculty and staff. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Kathryn Russo. I previously served as elementary school principal at Montowese School for the past five years. It’s been exciting to see many former students now at the high school all grown up, as well as meet many new students in my new role.
It’s always been an interest of mine to explore education at the high school level and it seemed the perfect time to do so. What I enjoy the most about my position is seeing students actively engaged in learning in the classroom, believing in their dreams, and developing into their own person. One of my favorite quotes is “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”- Maya Angelou.
My door is always open, and I encourage you to stop by to say hello. Outside of school life, I enjoy spending time with my husband, family and friends. I have two children, Carleigh (7yr) and Andrew (1yr), who keep me active. We enjoy hiking, going to the beach, and playing with our dog, Bailey."
Thomas Bushnell
"My name is Tom Bushnell, and I am one of the new assistant principals here at North Haven High School. I am so excited to be a member of such a tight-knit community. In just a few short weeks, I have seen, firsthand, a community that is compassionate, energetic, and dedicated to each and every student of North Haven. As an educator of nearly twenty years, these are some of the values that I hold dear. I am thrilled to continue to learn and grow within such a community.
Prior to coming to North Haven, I taught and coached basketball at St. Thomas More School (STM) for eight years; I had the privilege of coaching two players who are currently in the NBA- Andre Drummond and Damion Lee. After STM, I continued my career in Guilford, where I worked for ten years.
Outside of school, I enjoy exercising and staying active with my wife and two children, Benjamin (almost 8) and Delancey (almost 7). I enjoy coaching their youth sports teams, vacationing in Martha’s Vineyard, and spending quality time with friends and family. I am a huge New York sports fan- Mets, Giants, and Knicks!

Retired "Indian" Mascot Will Be Replaced
Schools and community participate in fair and inclusive process to offer options and vote on new choice

For many decades the mascot of North Haven Public Schools has been the “Indians”. This includes the name Indians as well as the image of an incorrect and stereotypical Native American. The mascot includes a stereotyped Native American man, with a braid in his hair, and a feather on his head. As times have progressed, many schools and sports teams have been changing their mascot names and logos that may be controversial or considered derogatory. North Haven is among those who have decided to change their mascot name.
The “Indian” mascot has become a very controversial topic in North Haven under current circumstances. In 2015, many people rallied together against the school board to change the “Indian” mascot name. A lot of people wanted the mascot to change from the derogatory “Indian” name after former students of North Haven Public Schools (NHPS) and some of the residents considered it very offensive. However, others argued that the Indian mascot held importance and was a part of the history of North Haven. Some former students argued that the Indian mascot was considered their legacy and wanted their children to continue on with this legacy. As a result of the residents' uproar, the mascot continued to remain the “Indians”. Lately, the Indians mascot has once again become a controversial topic. Arguments from both sides are continuously being made on whether to keep or remove the Indian Mascot. People with Indigenous backgrounds did not want the new generation to portray Indians in an offensive or incorrect way.
To solve this long term conflict, the North Haven Board of Education conducted a vote to decide whether or not they should keep the Indian Mascot. On May 13th, 2021 the North Haven BOE decided unanimously to retire the Indian mascot. Those who were fighting to remove the mascot were joyful to promote a new and improved future. However, those who wanted to remain the “Indians” were very upset by this decision.
Moving forward, the new mascot submissions were reviewed and a list of finalists has been revealed (See press release below). Submissions for a new mascot were gathered at all school levels and throughout the community. On November 16th, the North Haven Mascot Committee (NHMC) reviewed all submissions to ensure they were appropriate and respectful. Voting week will take place from December 6-10 2021 when the North Haven community will be able to vote for their top three choices. Students will vote by google form in school and a google form will be made available to the NH public. In addition, paper ballots will be located at the Senior Center, Library , and Town Hall. Residents will need to submit proof of residency during voting to ensure that this is a community-driven effort. Once ballots are tallied, the BOE will announce the new NHPS's mascot. Under the new updated mascot chosen through consensus by a diversified community members, the North Haven school community/athletes will continue their great legacy of achievement and accomplishment in classrooms and among athletic programs.

The NHMC is Proud to Present the People of North Haven with the Following 6 Finalists:
Fisher Cats: Fisher Cats are indigenous to North Haven and can be found in our wooded residential areas. They are known for their speed and fierce nature.
Nighthawks: These expert hunters can be found along the rivers and open fields of North Haven. Nighthawks are known for their persistence and stamina. They never give up.
Phoenix: The immortal mythical bird of fire known for obtaining new life by rising from the ashes of its predecessor. Also the name of the NHHS newspaper.
Ravens: These intelligent birds can be found on cliff faces as well as buildings within North Haven. They are experts at teamwork as they are often found in pairs.
Storm: After the recent bout of hurricanes and tornadoes, it is apt to pay homage to one of the most fearsome forces of nature, the storm.
Wolfpack: Previously indigenous to the area, these avid hunters are known to be highly social animals that form tight-knit packs. Wolves are all about their community.
In Loving Memory of Erin Perfetto
Erin's family and friends as well as NHHS educators gathered to celebrate the life of a wonderful young woman and dedicate a lovely bench in her honor. It graces the NHHS front walkway and has become a peaceful place where students gather to reflect on their day and sometimes sit and chat with friends.
On September 25th, a beautiful bench purchased by the Class of 2021 was dedicated in Erin Perfetto's name. The bench is located on the main walkway to the high school. Thanks to all who made a positive impact on Erin during her time here as a member of the North Haven school system. Erin's legacy lies in the many people whose lives she touched with her kindness and positivity and those who loved her and cherish treasured memories they shared with her.
Student athletes commit to colleges of choice
On Wednesday, November 10, 2021, five North Haven High School student-athletes officially committed to compete in athletics beyond NHHS in an official National Letter of Intent ceremony. The following students were recognized:
Umi El Mammann committed to Brown Univeristy for D1 Gymnastics.
Ally Vollero committed to Lafayette College for D1 Tennis.
Mike Anquillare committed to Stony Brook University for D1 Baseball.
Shea Saracino committed to Campbell University for D1 Lacrosse.
Derek Novicki committed to Keuka College for D3 Baseball.
A HUGE congratulations to these five athletes for their amazing achievements and representing NHHS at the college level! BRAVO!
2020 Gilder Lehrman History Teacher of the Year Award

A reception was held celebrating NHHS history teacher Federico Fiondella's wonderful accomplishment as recipient of the 2020 Gilder Lehrman History Teacher of the Year Award. The audience was packed with colleagues and administration who gathered to celebrate Fiondella's award and his many contributions to the NHHS community.

Former Math Teacher Matthew Mahoney Excites Students Upon his Return to Teach AP Calculus!
Retired math teacher, Matthew Mahoney made a surprise visit to NHHS to substitute for a few math classes. Students welcomed the much beloved educator and his mathematical expertise with open hearts/minds!
Former Social Studies Teacher June Barzilauskas Continues to Support North Haven Students!
June Barzilauskas was hired this year as a permanent NHHS substitute teacher. Students and staff are thrilled to continue to benefit from her kindness, knowledge, reliability, and expertise.

Students Move Forward With Administrative Artwork
NHHS Art instructor Katherine Fountain assists senior Independent Study Drawing and Painting student Juliana DeAngelo with stretching a large canvas. Juliana has completed a series of sketches that will be enlarged as paintings to be displayed in the North Haven Board of Education building. NH Art Honor Society students will assist with the long-term project designed to celebrate famous town landmarks and showcase student talents.
Halloween Celebrated at North Haven High School
Members of Best Buddies created an award winning pumpkin.
Mrs. Michelle DeGiacommo's nursery school class continued a long-standing tradition of trick or treating to NHHS classrooms to display their creative costumes. They never fail to illicit smiles!

Garden Club Hosts Scarecrow Competition
The North Haven Garden Club (Pictured left) sponsored their annual Scarecrow Competition that got children and families involved in creating wonderfully imaginative scarecrows that were featured on the town green for the month of October. The extraordinary results were judged by Art Coordinator of NH Public Schools, Diana Blythe and NHHS Art teacher, Brittany Hansen and prizes were awarded. Congratulations to all who participated and to all the winners! Thank you to the Garden Club for encouraging NH residents to go outdoors to enjoy safe, seasonal fun!
NHS Trunk or Treat
Event raises funds for those in need
National Honor Society (NHS) Students, pictured right, helped out local businesses and community organizations with their Trunk or Treat event on 10/24. They helped the children make crafts, painted faces, and gave out temporary tattoos.
National Honor Society members, Anna Schepisi, Domenico Sposito, Andrew Cecarelli, Mikey Brandt, with assistant Avery Zettergren, volunteered to help out!
North Haven elementary Art teacher and NHHS 2001 grad, Carina Ruotolo, discusses line/color choices and compositional design with her art students. The children are excited that the amazing Art Beat event returns on May 5 from 6-8pm on the first floor of the high school.
NHHS graduate returns to her roots to teach
Continuing a long-standing tradition among NHHS graduates, yet another alum has taken a position with the NH Pulbic Schools. Carina Ruotolo lives in town with her husband and two young daughters and teaches Art at Montowese and Clintonville Elementary Schools. Ruotolo comes to NH with 10 years of teaching experience in New Haven Public Schools and brings with her a wealth of knowledge, experience, and expertise. She looks forward to sharing her positive energy and enthusiasm with the children and families of the community she loves. North Haven wishes Ruotolo a successful and enjoyable experience. Drama Students Present "She Kills Monsters: Young Adventures Edition"
Welcome Back to the Theater!
The North Haven High School Drama Club presented "She Kills Monsters: Young Adventures Edition" from November 5 - November 7. The 90 minute show was a dramatic comedy filled with 90's pop culture and was a "homage to the geek and warrior within us all".

Consumer Science teacher Kathryn Speeg's Advanced Fashion Students participated in the "Unconventional Holiday Dress Challenge" and came up with these fascination results! Students used only holiday decorations and supplies to create festive cocktail dresses. Congrats on an amazing job on an extraordinarily inventive project! We look forward to the day when your unique designs are featured at the Met Gala, a movie premiere, or red carpet event!
NHMS celebrates student artistic achievement
Seventh grader Stella Shaw was recognized for "connecting with the community through Art" recently at a small private ceremony. Stella's artwork was selected as the North Haven winner of the Lion's International Peace Poster Contest.
