North Haven Nighthawks Boys Hockey: Skates Their Way Towards the Title
Could 19-and-2 record predict championship win?
By Isabella Russo
The North Haven Nighthawks Boy’s Hockey team started their season with one goal in mind: to win. From the very beginning, the Nighthawks hit the ice hard, and never let up. With a proud student section behind them to cheer them on, The North Haven Hockey Team looks like they are ready to take on this season, no matter what is thrown their way.
Their first game of the season, against Lyman Hall, proved just that. Although Lyman was able to get one goal into the net within the first period, this didn’t stop them. As the game progressed, the Nighthawks secured many points by Alex Petersen (1 goal, 3 assists), Jake Donovan (2 goals), Will Sullivan (1 goal, 2 assists), and Tommy Guidone (2 goals, 3 assists). With Bryce Petersen in net, he rallied a total of 16 saves by the end of the game. Jake Donovan was named “MVP” by his coaches and team, due to his impressive skills that he laid out on the ice that evening. The end score ended up being 6-1, their first win of the season. This game would be what launched them into the rest of their exciting season.
The team soon faced St. Joseph’s. From the very beginning, it was clear that this was going to be a very close game. St. Joseph’s was a very strong team. Within the first period, the Nighthawks were able to score and get their team on the board. Very soon after, St. Josephs was able to score in order to tie up the game. This pattern continued for the rest of the game-- we would score then they would score. By the third period, the Nighthawks were able to push through and score two goals, making the score 4-3 with us in the lead. As the clock counted down and the crowd got louder and louder, everybody thought the game was over. That was until St. Josephs scored right before the buzzer, tying the game.
With this sudden overtime, the clock started again and the boys hit the ice with a mission. Will Sullivan took a shot on net, and scored: the Nighthawks had won the game. Bryce Mastriano (2 goals), Will Sullivan (2 goals, 1 assist), and Bryce Petersen (12 saves) were named the players of the game. “MVP” was given to Bryce Mastriano due to his outstanding performance on the ice as a freshman, scoring his first varsity points. This game was close until the end, but the boys were able to gain an impressive win against a D1 team.
The Nighthawks soon hit the road for their games against Greenwich as well as Farmington Valley, both ending very successfully. They had a 3-1 win against Greenwich with goals coming from Tommy Guidone (1 goal, 2 assists), as well as Will Sullivan (2 goals). Goalie Bryce Petersen held his own in goal, with a total of 19 saves. After playing Farmington Valley, the Nighthawks pulled out yet another 3-1 win! This time, goals came from Tommy Guidone (2 goals) and Paul Mastriano (1 goal). Petersen had a total of 12 saves, leading the team to victory. So far this season, he has proven to be an asset to this team and a strong goalie. He has made numerous saves so far and looks like he is in for a successful season.
As the season continues, it will be very exciting to see what the team has in store. The boys have made it clear that they will be a true competitor in the league. With each game, they have proven their ability to move the puck down the ice and score, with a talented goalie to back them up. With an undefeated season so far, the team will have to continue to work hard and stay humble so they can work towards their end goal of winning the state championship game. The North Haven Nighthawks Boys Hockey team is back and better than ever before, and it is time to see how the season progresses!
Tom Brady played his most memorable seasons with the Patriots, helping them to win six Super Bowls.
Brady played his final seasons with the Buccaneers, winning 1 more Super Bowl before retiring.
Brady Retires after 23 Magical Seasons...or did he?
Did the Greatest of All Time step away from the game for good?
By William Sagnella
Tom Brady has been loved and hated all throughout his career. Fans love him for his skill and winning ability, and at the same time, fans from other teams hate him for the same reason. But winning aside, Tom Brady’s gifted ability should be respected by everyone who has seen him play. Brady played collegiate football at the University of Michigan for four years. When starting at quarterback, Brady posted a 20-5 record in the final two years of his college career. He entered the 2000 NFL Draft with hopes of getting picked, but a team did not select him until the 199th overall pick - and that team was the New England Patriots.
In his rookie season, he played backup for starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe, and only saw action in one game when Bledose sustained an injury. In Brady’s 2001-2002 season Drew Bledsoe started over him once again. However, the Patriots lost the first two games of the season, and head coach Bill Belichick decided to start Brady for the last 14 games. Brady improved their record to 11-5 on the season, granting the Patriots a first round bye. The Patriots went on to face the Rams in the Super Bowl, and emerged victorious thanks to a last minute game winning field goal by Adam Vinatieri. The field goal was thanks to Brady, who orchestrated a last minute drive that put the Patriots into field goal range. The Patriots would miss out on the playoffs the next year, but they would win the Super Bowl 5 times in the next 16 years, and make it to the big game 8 years out of 16.
This magical relationship between Brady and the Patriots suddenly came to a close in 2020, not even a year after Brady won his last Super Bowl with the Patriots. There were many speculations about Brady's decision, some being contract oriented. Others say Brady’s decision had to do with the lack of his say in team additions. Whatever the reason, Brady parted ways with Bill Belichick and the Patriots after 20 seasons and 6 Super Bowl titles. In March of 2020 Brady joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, signing a two-year contract worth $50 million, but then in 2021 signed another one-year extension worth $25 million.
Brady played 3 years for the Buccaneers, helping them to win a Super Bowl in his first year. He played out two more seasons, not making it to the big game in either. At the end of this current season, Brady and the Bucs sneaked into the playoffs despite a tight division race with the Carolina Panthers towards the end of the season. The Bucs met the Dallas Cowboys in the first round where they were defeated 31-14. There was lots of speculation about Brady’s retirement at the end of this game, and plenty of questions arose. Would he resign and play another year? Would Brady finally hang up his cleats after 23 seasons in the NFL? Originally Brady announced his retirement about a year ago around the same time, only to come back and play another season. However, this time he would retire for good, announcing to the sports world on February 1st. Brady won’t walk away from football fully, though. He signed a 10-year contract with Fox Sports, and will start broadcasting football games.
No one would have guessed that Brady would be where he is now. He wasn’t even a first round pick. Most NFL stars nowadays are picked by teams in the first or second round. Brady went from zero to hero. He started at rock bottom. He worked himself up to earn the title the G.O.A.T.
Students Long for Indoor Track Training Facilities
Will a new indoor track be coming soon to North Haven?
By Jake McCreven
While Connecticut is fortunate enough to have a sustainable, reliable, and competitive indoor track season every winter, there is still one glaring concern regarding the status and health of these athletes. Limited schools – if any – have indoor track facilities at the ready. There are a scarce number of tracks that have been certified by the CIAC to host a meet. With the lack of a true facility, this forces programs to pick between two options; practice outside (in December and January) or practice in the hallways of your given school. Most schools choose the latter. Besides state-best Xavier, all indoor track practices happen inside, which drastically impacts athletes in ways that are not as beneficial as staying away from the cold weather.
While practicing indoors – without an actual track – athletes run on the tile or wood floors provided by their school. Running on tile to prepare for running on rubber is a drastic disadvantage for athletes. Their legs become acclimated to the wrong surface. They practice on tile while competing on rubber. Their legs suffer the consequences of running on hardened tile, increasing the risk of injury to vital tendons and muscles like the Achilles or calf, their minds become accustomed to timing themselves according to the length and turns of their school’s hallways. This can inhibit athletes from reaching their full potential as not only an individual, but as a team.
Due to their being less opportunity for bettering themselves at practice, meets themselves often serve as developmental situations for athletes. Let's look at the times of North Haven athletes for the 55m hurdles (39”); 8.65, 10.77, 10.36, and compare those same athlete’s times to the 110m hurdles for the outdoor season; 15.9, 20.41, 19.01. Technically speaking, athletes should be running ‘x’ time for their indoor season and ‘2x’ for their outdoor season (55m for the indoor season is exactly half of the 110m of the outdoor season). Take a look at the first set of times: 8.65 55m, 15.9 110m. If this athlete ran an 8.65, then for a race exactly double the length, they should be running a 17.3. I am not discrediting the athlete for their own self-improvement, however, for a gap of almost 1.5 seconds from projected to actual times to appear is a tell-tale sign of a lack of indoor opportunity. This is not the only case in which this is apparent. Both of the other aforementioned athletes had gaps of 1.13 and 1.71 seconds respectively. There is a clear discrepancy between these times, which can hamper athletes striding for college money and scholarship opportunities.
