It might!
If you got a score of 4 or 5 on the AP, it will transfer in as SPNS 2101.
If you took an IB exam, you may receive credit for SPNS 1101 and SPNS 1102. These courses do not count towards the minor, but do count as college credit! Take a look at this document to find out more: https://admissions.northeastern.edu/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/IB-2021-2022.pdf
Students may transfer in up to two courses to count towards the Spanish minor from other institutions (including AP credit).
Some transfer courses do count towards the minor. If your course transferred in with a number that matches on the list in Course Options, your course will count towards the minor.
Please note that some courses transfer in as college credit only (such as SPNS 2990 and SPNS 3990) and do not count towards the minor.
Please start by taking the placement test here: https://cssh.northeastern.edu/wlc/experiential-academics/language-requirement-and-testing/
If you place higher than SPNS 1101, you will need a prerequisite override in order to be able to register. Please contact Professor Agostinelli at c.agostinelli-fucile@northeastern.edu and include your placement test score, as well as your NUID number.
If a new course was added after you started the minor, your degree audit might not list the elective you took as an option. That is ok, it just requires a manual override.
Please contact the World Languages Center program manager, Boris Rasting-Sera, at b.rastingsera@northeastern.edu and include your NUID number in your email.
Right now, we only offer on-campus and online courses over during Summer 1. As course offerings depend on faculty availability, we cannot guarantee these courses.
Another option for summer courses is Dialogue of Civilizations programs. We typically have at least one option during Summer 1 and Summer 2. For up-to-date information on DOC programs, please visit: https://geo.northeastern.edu/programs/dialogue-of-civilizations/
We are no longer offering SPNS 2401 or 2402. Instead, we are offering SPNS 3401 Spanish for Healthcare Professionals at the advanced level. The prerequisite of this course is SPNS 2102, but students who have taken SPNS 3101 or 3102 can also
The elective courses are offered on a rotating basis. We try to offer each of them during both fall and spring semesters in order to accommodate both co-op rotations, but we cannot guarantee that specific courses will be offered during specific semesters.
Students who have declared the minor will get updates before registration each semester with the list of upcoming electives. If you see an elective you are interested in taking, it is a good idea to register for it that semester
Yes they do! See the NUPath page to find the options.
We are no longer offering SPNS 2401 or 2402.
Instead, we are offering SPNS 3401 Spanish for Healthcare Professionals 1 and SPNS 3402 Spanish for Healthcare Professionals 2 at the advanced level. Thes courses are electives that count towards the Spanish minor. They do not replace SPNS 3101 Advanced Spanish 1 or SPNS 3102 Advanced Spanish 2 as they specifically focus on medical vocabulary and cultural topics related to treating Hispanic patients. The minimum requirement for SPNS 3401 Spanish for Healthcare Professionals 1 is SPNS 2102 Intermediate Spanish 2, but it is open to all students at the advanced level.
Yes! If you have a tight schedule, but are looking to take a class that counts towards the Spanish minor, CLTR 1240 Latin American Film is a good option. It is offered asynchronously every Fall and Spring and occasionally, it is offered during Summer 1 as well.
There are sometimes other asynchronous options offered during Summer 1, but those courses are not guaranteed.
Most programs that count towards the Spanish minor include CLTR 4944 Cultural Engagement Abroad and SPNS 2900/3900 Specialized Instruction in Spanish.
Your professor will place you in SPNS 2900 or SPNS 3900 depending on your level. Both count as electives for the minor!
Yes, you can. You can transfer in up to two courses from another institution (including AP credit).
