The ECE Department has access to a many software options available within Northeastern University for use by faculty, staff, and students. Each of the software options are specifically designed and approved for general use within the ECE enviroment. The most popular software options are as follows:
Site Licensed - General use software for most faculty, staff, and students on Windows and MacOS PCs.
COE Virtual Lab (VLAB) - Customized software applications installed in both Windows and Linux virtual PCs.
Other - Other software that is available through various Northeastern University ITS websites. The software on these other websites are not well maintained or updated as frequently. These websites host specialty software available for faculty, staff and students for short term or long term use. Access is available by submitting requests online.
Site Licensed is the most common software option for anyone looking to have the most up to date applications for general productivity on their PC. Northeastern University ITS maintains a list of all software available to faculty, staff, and students. Information is provided here on how to access the software based on whether the PC is managed or unmanaged for both Windows and MacOS environments. ITS managed PCs will have a self-service software utility (Windows Software Center or MacOS JAMF) available that list all software applications that can be automatically retrieved and installed. Unmanaged PCs will require you to download the software yourself from websites or using information in link above. For unmanaged PCs used by students, please note the requirements and restrictions listed for each software application on Northeastern's software information page. In some cases even after installing the software, approval will still be required to activate the license. For instance, Microsoft Office software applications for sponsored students will require faculty approval via ITS by submitting an online request to grant access to license. A sponsored student by default only has access to web based Microsoft office applications for use.
COE Virtual Lab (VLAB) supports academic computing for your projects. The VLAB offers virtual Windows 10 and Linux desktops with a wide selection of specialized Engineering software. These virtual desktops can be accessed from any computer with a network connection. The use of VLAB allow you access to license software applications that you would normally install on your own PC. A list of available software applications installed on the VLAB Windows PCs can be found here. Access to COE's VLAB is through the use of Horizon VMWare Client software available from COE's Help Website. Download and install the Horizon VMWare Client software listed on this help website or directly from https://vlabduo.coe.neu.edu/. The information on this direct link also allows you to access VLAB using just a browser if you choose not to install the client software.
Other software packages are available from Northeastern University via a ITS request using this link or through a speciality link for other less used software. Please note that these other software packages are intended for faculty/staff on university owned computers that are not configured with the standard software image (non-ITS managed). Requests for other licensed software will require handling the local installation yourself.
