Lucid Dreaming as Metacognition

Presenter: Shala Spence, NEAAAT Instructional Coach

Typically when we dream we are not aware that what we are experiencing is occurring only in our mind. Although the contents of our dreams can be illogical, confusing and bizarre, most of us generally just go along through the experience, but not arriving at the level of awareness where we understand that we are currently immersed in a dream. However, as more people are discovering, it is possible to become conscious that we are dreaming while dreaming; this is the phenomenon known as lucid dreaming.

The ability to control a conscious cognitive process, and play a role in self-reflection, is a characteristic of both lucid dreamers and metacognition. Are YOU a lucid dreamer? Could lucid dreaming and metacognition possibly have the same origin?
