English Language Arts (ELA)
Students will enjoy reading and writing in whole group and small group settings during our Language Arts block. Both fiction and non-fiction books will be introduced through "Wit and Wisdom", and students will have the opportunity to apply their reading skills independently and in peer discussion groups. Using a variety of genres, skills, and specific strategies, students will improve comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, and decoding while enhancing their confidence and enjoyment of reading. Students will be using trade books, picture books and leveled passages to advance their own individual reading rates and abilities.
Students can also find supplemental literature using our library catalogue called "Destiny." You can search for books from home or from school! Visit https://northbranford.follettdestiny.com to access your child's circulation information, renew books online and more! All you'll need is your child's username and password.
Personal Learning Time (PLT)
Students work closely with classroom teachers and specialists during PLT time as they embark on individualized learning activities. Students employ the key 21st century skills of communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity as they apply their foundational reading, writing and math skills in a variety of ways.
Mathematics
T.V.E.S. students will use Illustrative Math as the primary resource for exploring 8 key units of study involving place value (including multi-digit addition and subtraction), multi-digit multiplication and division, fractions, decimals, measurement and data, and geometry. Students will be challenged to problem solve then critique and defend solutions using multiple mathematical strategies and methods. Both paper-based and digital practice of skills and concepts are available for all students.
Science
As we move toward the Next Generation Science Standards with Mystery Science, Grade 4 students will enjoy investigating the human machine, the birth of rocks, waves of sound, and energizing everything. Science kits are hands-on and promote inquiry and scientific discovery. A field trip to the CT River Museum in Essex, CT ends our year!
Social Studies
T.V.E.S. has an exciting and interactive Social Studies curriculum based on the new C3 Framework. Fourth graders will discover the tools of inquiry used by geographers, economists, civic leaders and historians. They will focus on the 5 themes of geography as they explore location, place, region, movement and how the interaction between people and their environment impacts our future.
