- Begin preparing several days in advance. Come to class every day. Math builds on itself like a story. Missing something can have negative consequences for a long time.
- Students ask me all the time, "How do I study for math?". REMEMBER- TO STUDY MATH, YOU DO MATH!!! If you are studying for an assessment in solving 2-step equations, solve a lot of 2-step equations and make sure you are doing them correctly. You can use the following steps to help you DO MATH and check you answers.
- Make sure you do all you homework leading up to the quiz or test. Math skills are like basketball skills or baseball skills. You can be out of practice. The more you practice, the better, faster, and more accurate you will be. This will make it easier to learn new, harder things. You'll also remember it for longer and will perform better under pressure, such as on a quiz or test. Always show your work. Organized work leads to organized thinking. Plus, if you get a question wrong, you can go back and see why.
- Use your math book as a resource.
- Each student can sign out a math book to keep at home as a resource.
- There are selected answers in the back of the text. Do some practice problems and then check your answers. If you get a question wrong, go back and redo it until you get it right. Be sure you understand what your mistake was. There are practice lesson questions, chapter review questions, chapter test questions and more.
- Please be aware that the textbook does not mirror the curriculum, as we have developed our own curriculum based on the national common core frameworks. You will need to use it as a resource and look up the topic in the table of contents or glossary.
- Bring your math binder home.
- The notes are the most valuable tool when studying for a test or quiz. There are practice problems in those notes. Try doing them again and check your answers. Also, review the vocabulary and important concepts in the notes. Be sure to focus in on the common mistakes that I point out in class.
- Homework is also useful. Try some of each type. Also, focus on the problems that you did not get correct originally. See if you can get them correct now.
- Come for after school help. I am available on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 3:00.
- Use the additional resources and answer keys that are available on this website. Find additional practice problems online by searching the topic. Khan Academy and youtube are helpful here.
- Use the learning tab on IXL to review skills and pre-learn skills that are needed to be successful in the standards. Remember, your username is firstinitiallastname@nams and your password is your school password.
- Form a study group- You learn so much from your peers. Work together and help each other to understand.
