English Language Arts Course Description

7th Grade Language Arts

We will be implementing the SAVVAS, My Perspectives 7th grade edition. This student -centered learning environment will require students to analyze text, cite evidence, and respond critically to learning. Students will take ownership of their learning through goal -setting, reflection, independent text selection, and activities that allow them to collaborate with their peers. As students read, they will engage in activities that inspire thoughtful discussion and debate with their peers allowing them to formulate and defend their own perspectives.

Additionally, students will annotate text, and will eventually utilize exciting technology to access multimedia directly from their chrome books, and communicate using an online discussion board This class will consist of direct instruction & note -taking, independent work, cooperative groups & tasks, formative assessments, class work, homework, summative assessments, quizzes, and in -class projects.

Within the reading course work, we will work through "anchor texts" as a whole class. "Anchor text" stands for a text that we use as a teacher to model and teach the expectations and standards that the students are expected to achieve. As we will use the anchor text to model reading skills, the students will choose their own book within the same genre/topic range to read and achieve learning targets. In the Daily Bell Ringer, academic vocabulary will be introduced and practiced within daily writing exercises.

The students will have access to all literature and writing assignments through that Pearson Portal and Google Classroom.
