Artist Assemblage Boxes

Elliot Dominguez: I played around with the box a lot before deciding that I wanted to make a computer. I didn't originally have the idea of the zoom meeting screen, but I'm glad I did it, because it really represents this whole year. I also really enjoyed this project because I got to smash a keyboard, and it was really fun.

Ingalls Vincent: I wanted to combine the ethereal and earthly aesthetic influences that I feel best represent my art. I've always liked storytelling, and I feel that this box allows viewers to use their imaginations freely to create a narrative.

Daniel Constantin: Bulgarian Spring In Bulgaria, there is a tradition in March to celebrate the coming of Spring. Everyone wears martenitsas, bracelets made with red and white string, until the first sign of Spring. The martenitsas are then left somewhere, such as on a blooming tree or under a rock. The practice is said to bring good health for its participants.

Andre Pellebon: Monster Box!

Maddie Monistere: I wanted to make an art piece using an Altoids box. I built the base of my closet, and used popsicle sticks stained with coffee as the wood on the door and to build the shelf. I also used some tape as wallpaper. Inside, I added little hangers and clothes.

Ryan McCray-Smith: For this piece, I really just wanted to challenge myself to do multiple elements, and to work on something that was fun and challenging. I’ve never done anything like this before, and it was a big step. The concept I went for was connecting the brain and heart to a computer (inside of box), and in a way relating the human self to technology, and pointing out possible similarities between both. This piece is definitely up for interpretation by anyone.

Iris Kobrock: I used this piece as an opportunity to utilize a found object, specifically this old cigar box. I wanted to create an image that would remind me of home, since a lot of my work this year has reflected on the appreciation for my home that I have developed during quarantine. I chose to paint pansies from my mother's garden, and I allowed the found object to show through in the final image, leaving some of the wood exposed.

Lilith LaCaze: My box is representative of my room/house. On the outside it's a bit bland or unassuming. On the inside there's little things I collect or am interested in. They're important to me, and the box is like a safe.

Sofia Olexia-Daigle: When I think of a box I think of it as a containment to keep something treasured. For me, its memories. I decided to create a door on the outside to let others into my past and my present.

Samiyah Payton: A fool to love, a fool to cherish old memories. To think one could love would be so careless. Never to fall for it again, I pack the most vulnerable part of me away. Never to be seen, never to be touched. Out of harm's way. Here I place the pain I carry. Here I place my heart under lock and key.

Xixi Smith: Creating a box for small things, a foggy memory warped while sitting on a little blue chair. Held in little tranquility, dizzying sturdiness of hardened bumpy walls.

Tylan Oliney: Tylan created a tiny, portable museum, replete with moveable patrons visiting his colorful Abstract paintings.
