NATIONAL
HONOR
SOCIETY

What is the National Honor Society?

· The National Honor Society is a service organization that exists to help others and to offer opportunities for students to develop their leadership skills, demonstrate their character, and engage in a variety of service projects.

· Service projects can be large or small, and involve working with the school, the community, or partnering with other organizations or NHS chapters on larger projects.

· Students can propose and develop their own projects or join existing projects.

· Each chapter is a community of like-minded peers working together for a common goal- you can build new friendships and grow together as a chapter.

· NHS Scholarships and resources for students preparing for college are accessible to members.

What are the requirements for membership?

· You must be a junior or senior (11th grade or 12th grade).

· You must have a 3.2 weighted GPA or higher as of the last report card.

· You must be able to provide examples of meaningful leadership and service experiences you have engaged in while in high school.

· If you have just transferred to DHS, you must wait one semester to establish a presence at DHS before you can put your name forward as a candidate.

What will my responsibilities be?

· Primarily: active participation in the organization. This means:

o Attending chapter meetings.

o Participating in chapter-wide projects.

o Participating in or developing service projects to help the school and/or community.

o Maintaining the standards of the NHS: a minimum of a 3.2 weighted GPA, excellent character, and continuing leadership and service.

· There are dues ($20) that go towards funding NHS membership and graduation paraphernalia (membership pins, stoles, etc.).
