Generative AI for Faculty

How do we promote authentic, student-centered teaching during rapid technological change and growth?

Skeen Library seeks to support instructors with best practices for introducing students to generative AI at New Mexico Tech. As this technology evolves, Skeen Library will continue to identify, curate, and share resources to support instructional success at NMT.

Skeen Library Guiding Principles of AI in Academia:

1. Human intelligence and creativity are now, and will always be, our guiding priority.

2. Generative AI models are tools to promote and support human learning.

3. AI use in an academic setting must be responsible, purposeful, and ethical.

4. Expectations regarding the use of AI must be fully transparent and consistent for all university members.

5. Students must be given the opportunity to practice utilizing AI tools.

Faculty Considerations regarding AI:

1. What are your expectations about the use of AI in your course(s)?

2. How will you clearly communicate your expectations about the use of AI to your students?

3. Will you use an AI detection program for submitted student work? If yes, how will you inform students preemptively about those tools?

4. How will you ensure equity among student access to AI, and the use of AI in your course(s)?

5. How will you inform your students about the risks associated with AI use?
