MATH 231: Calculus III

Prerequisite: MATH 132, or equivalent

  • Textbook (required): Edwards & Penney, Calculus, 6th Edition, Prentice-Hall, 2003
  • Course Description: Chapters 8, 11, 12, 13, 14. Vectors in the plane and 3-space, vector calculus in two dimensions, partial derivatives, multiple integration, topics in vector calculus, and complex numbers and functions.
  • Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
    • Perform the algebra operations on vectors in the plane,
    • Describe lines, planes, and surfaces in 3-space
    • Compute the tangent and normal vectors to space curves,
    • Compute tangential and normal components of acceleration,
    • Sketch functions of several variables,
    • Compute tangent plane to surfaces,
    • Describe and use the Chain Rule,
    • Compute extreme values of functions of several variables,
    • Compute multiple integrals,
    • Compute surface area, mass, and moments,
    • Compute line integrals and test for independence of path,
    • State and use Green's, Stokes', Divergence Theorem
    • Solve first and second order differential equations
  • Testing:
    • Tests: There will be four in-class one-hour midterm exams during the semester that will count for 20% each of your total grade.
    • Homework: There will be daily homework assignements during the semester. The homework will count for 20% of the grade.
  • Grading: Grades will be determined on a 100 point scale: 90%-100%: A; 80%-89%: B; 70%-79%: C; 60%-69%: D; < 60%: F. Those point totals near cutoff will be individually considered for the next higher grade. A plus/minus grades will be used, but there are neither A+ nor D- grades. I do reserve the right to add some extra points depending on the class participation and outstanding exam performance.
  • Exam and Homework Policy:
    • Calculators will be allowed on the tests, but you have to show your work in detail. A correct answer without all intermediate steps leading to the result will not guarantee full credit. (The correct reasoning is much more important than the numerical or symbolic answer).
    • Make-up exams will be given only in cases of extremely properly documented emergencies.
    • No make-ups will be allowed for quizzes.
    • Late homework will not be accepted.
    • Test dates will be announced one week in advance. Students are responsible for class attendance and being prepared for test on time. Students are expected to take tests on the announced dates. It is the student's responsibility to attend class and be current with homework and take tests on time. If a student is unable to take a test because of a legitimate reason, the student must make prior arrangements with me.
  • Attendance: I expect students to attend all class sessions, to take notes, to participate in all class activities and to take all exams at the announced time. If a student is unable to attend a class, the student is responsible to make up the missed work and get the assignments.
  • Changes: The course plan may be modified during the semester. Such modifications will be announced in advance during class periods. You are responsible for keeping abreast of such changes.
