What's happening in the fourth grade?

Language Arts

Our first module uses literature and informational text to introduce students to what inspires people to write. It is intentionally designed to encourage students to embrace a love of literacy and writing. In Unit 2, students continue thinking about what inspires writers to write poetry. In the first half of Unit 2, students finish reading Love That Dog. They think about what inspired the main character, Jack, to write and they collect evidence from his poetry supporting their thinking. They are introduced to informative writing and write an informative paragraph for the mid-unit assessment about what inspires Jack.

Mathematics

Our second unit is designed to extend students' understanding of multiplication and division.

Students will:

  • solve problems involving multiplication comparisons by using multiplication and division.

  • know basic multiplication facts to find the factors of a number.

  • use rules to generate or extend a number or shape pattern.

Social Studies

Ancient Civilizations of North America

How do archaeologists develop theories about ancient migrations? In our second unit, students will understand that the North American continent has been inhabited for thousands of years, and that large and highly organized ancient societies flourished long before Europeans arrived in North America.

Physical Science

Waves of Sound

In our second unit, students develop the idea that sound is an actual thing, a wave of vibrations traveling through the air. Equipped with this understanding, students will begin to make sense of how sound and music work.
