House Bill 111, introduced by co-sponsors Representative Andrea Romero and Representative Angelica Rubio, modernizes the Uniform Owner Resident Relations Act and the New Mexico Human Rights Act to balance the rights of tenants and landlords in eviction proceedings.

Synopsis of amendments to Uniform Owner Resident Relations Act (UORRA), Amendments to the Human Rights Act:

  1. For renters who are behind on rent, it extends timeframes to come current on rent before eviction proceedings can be initiated and provides additional opportunities for tenants to comply with the lease and remain in their homes. New Mexico currently has some of the shortest time frames in the U.S.

  2. Requires magistrate and metropolitan courts to maintain a resource list of nonprofit legal services providers and state and local entities that provide rental assistance to qualifying applicants to be served to defendants along with the summons.
