The importance of interdisciplinary work in a university can hardly be overstated. Centre for Linguistic Justice and Endangered Languages (CLJEL) aims to facilitate an innovative approach towards the ongoing research and teaching thrust, and also to become a unique initiative in the country, as well as a role model for other legal education institutions for interdisciplinary work.

NLUD was awarded with a very prestigious Research Programme based upon the Funding Support for Study and Research in Indigenous and Endangered Languages in India by UGC. Thus ensued the work on endangered languages. This is the background against which a centre for Linguistic Justice and Endangered Languages was conceptualized. An advisory committee meeting of this project also felt the need of formation of a Centre for Linguistic Justice and Endangered Languages at NLUD with the aim to bolster up these efforts of NLUD in a focused, and permanent way.

The Academic Council (vide item No.11 dated 30 July 2018) ‘considered the establishment of Centre for Linguistic Justice and Endangered Languages and recommended to the Executive Council for approval. Further, the Executive Council on 13 August 2018, by its Item Number 2.7 of the minutes of its meeting held on 30 July 2018 approved the above recommendations of Academic Council.

NLUD has a well-focused teaching programmes linking law with Language, Linguistics, Literature, culture and Communication Skills. Several research papers have been produced by me, as the faculty member of the concerned subject to give shape to the curriculum and pedagogy in the field.

In its brief history, CLJEL has already conducted the international conference on Rromani Language, Linguistic Rights, and Linguistic Justice in collaboration with the Rromani Division (South-India and Himalaya Dpt.) of the National Institute for Oriental Languages and Culture, Paris (INALCO) on 5 December 2018. More events are in the pipeline.
