History of our School

The citizens of Shea Heights built the original school. They formed a citizens’ committee presided over by Mr. Michael Power. In 1933 the school started out with just one room, a class of 55 students and a single teacher; Miss Florence O’Neil. Mrs. Mary Mahoney assisted Miss O’Neil. In the late 1940’s two new rooms were added to the school but our community was growing quickly and the need for an improved building was realized. By 1957 the school had 5 classrooms and 225 students, 100 of these students were in grade one and had to attend school at different times because the school could not accommodate all of them at the same time.In 1959 plans for 9 additional classrooms and a church that could seat 400 was in place. The 60’s saw a lot of new changes to our school; a new gym was built, there was a library, home economics, industrial arts, music, music theory, art, and several different athletic activities such as track and field, soccer and cheerleading were offered to students By the 1970’s our community had grown a lot and the need for a bigger school again had become realized. Portable classrooms for the Primary classes were introduced.

In 1978, St. John Bosco had its first high school class graduate. 1982 again saw an expansion to our school. A new high school was added and the portables were removed. A new library, cafeteria, and several new classrooms were built. The entire classes from K-12 were located in the same building. In 2002 the high school students were zoned to attend Holy Heart of Mary High School leaving St John Bosco as a K-9 school. Today, St. John Bosco School is a K-9 school. We have approximately 221 students and a staff of about 30
