Q. Why should I be a Shaver?
A. The Shave for the Brave is a series of Community, School, Office and Solo Shave events held from February to April every year. It is YACC’s biggest fundraiser and provides funds for all of the support programs Young Adult Cancer Canada provides.
There are also large symbolic and emotional components to any Shave event. Donating your hair for wigs or shaving your head bald is a big sacrifice and those who participate have a lot invested in the activity. Some do it to support a loved one dealing with cancer, to remember someone they lost to cancer, or simply to help support the cause. By participating in larger Shaves, people get to show the world that they care. The very personal action, combined with a public setting, makes for a unique and unforgettable experience!
Q. What is the registration fee?
A. $25 for youth 18 and under, $40 for adults 19 and over. Registration fees can be waved by pledging to raise this much or more in donations.
Q. Do I need to shave my head?
A. No, hair donations of 10" are also accepted.
Q. What are the requirements for a hair donation?
A. Hair being donated for wigs should be at least 10 inches long and either braided or in a pony tail secured at both ends. Highlighted or coloured hair and even hair from previous chemotherapy patients is accepted. Unfortunately wigs cant be made out of permed, bleached, chemically straightened, or African-American hair. Hair must be clean and dry before donation.
Q. Can I shave my head in support without donating?
A. Yes, registration fees still apply. All Shavers will receive an official yellow Shave for the Brave toque to keep warm and show their support long after their hair grows back.
Q. Will I have any hair left after the Shave, or will I be completely bald?
A. For an official Young Adult Cancer Canada Shave, no guard is to be used on the clippers. This will leave about 1/8 inch of hair. All Shavers will receive an official yellow Shave for the Brave toque to keep warm and show their support long after their hair grows back.
Q. Will my hair be styled after I give a hair donation?
A. No, the hair is put into a pony tail or a braid and cut above the elastic straight across. For time constraints, we cannot allow the time to style each persons hair. Most people book a hair appointment for a few hours after the event so their hair can be cut and styled to their liking.
Q. I don't want to shave or donate hair, can I still help out?
A. Yes, we are always looking for volunteers to help us put together this school event. If you would like to help out, or have any other questions, email Faith @ fyoung12_s@nlesd.ca
