Spinach, Kale and Lettuce grew wonderfully in our Hydroponics tanks this year. What was your favourite?
December in the LRC was one to remember. Lots of choice, hands-on centers and learning taking place. Thanks to the grade 6 classes for transforming the space into Santa's Workshop - You made the space feel magical for all the younger students!
The annual Elementary Writers Workshop was frightfully good again this year. We could not BOO-lieve how bone chilling and eerie these stories were. Thank you to Charis Cotter; your presentation on haunted houses certainly helped set the mood.
Check out her website (https://www.chariscotter.com) if you are interested in buying some of Charis' spooky books.

We were transported all over the world today as grade 5 Sinclair showcased their Famous Landmark and World Wonder research projects. What a WONDERful display of lots of hard work.
It is with lots of excitement that we make this post.
Last month Riverside was awarded a $5000 grant from Brilliant Labs to help improve our makerspace area. With this grant, we received webcams, microphones, a variety of building materials, a button maker, Cricut tools, Robotic Machine Kits, Looms and hooks, a 3D printer and much more!
This grant has been a huge help in improving our maker space and will enhance student learning for years to come. Thank you so much to Brilliant Labs / Labos créatifs

It's an exciting week at Riverside - One with all kinds of new life!
-In grade 2 the caterpillars have turned into butterflies
-The grade 4's have about 100 salmon fry growing in the front lobby
-In grade 5 they have 20 newly hatched chicks
Today we are excited about the arrival and set up of our new 3D printer!
This was made possible through a $500 grant from Brilliant Labs / Labos créatifs. We are thrilled with this new learning opportunity. A huge THANK YOU from all of us here at Riverside!
Now... What will we print? The options are endless!
The Clarenville Lions Club has given Riverside $600 for new books.
Check out what we got - Literally! All books were based on student requests and are making many students in the building very happy. Thank you to the Clarenville Lions Club for another generous donation!
In the week leading up to the holiday break, students were encouraged to complete marshmallow challenges.
Building the tallest structure using only toothpicks and marshmallows
Designing catapults or slingshots to launch marshmallows across the LRC.
Creative model building and so much s'more.
This month we teamed up with the Association of New Canadians to promote diversity and inclusion for Multiculturalism Month! Two grade 4 classes participated in a "Citizen of the World" event. Students completed a research project and completed a booth and allowed students to safely "travel" to other countries. Once they visited each country they were provided with a sticker to obtain their "visa" for their passport! So much fun. Thank you to the ANC! We are looking forward to continuing our partnership. Happy Multiculturalism Month!
As we shift back to online learning, please take note of the following point made by our province's Chief Medical Health Officer, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald:
Before posting online "remember the acronym THINK. Is it True, is it Helpful, is it Inspiring, is it Necessary or is it Kind?"
I am certain by now your child has filled you in on their Mummering Workshop in the LRC. Perhaps your child has come home looking to make an instrument? Been asking to mummer a friend or family member? Dressed in a disguise and asked for a sweet treat? Asked you if you've been mummering yourself?
We wanted to share the excitement with you all and fill you in on what's been happening at Riverside.
Students learned about this exciting Newfoundland tradition by making their own musical instruments, joining kitchen parties and the mummers parade with the green screen, dressing up and disguising themselves as mummers, creating lego houses and mummers, listening to live musical guests, exploring virtual mummering activities and much more! Oh… and of course, all mummers deserve a glass of Purity Syrup and a Jam Jam!
To cap off this exciting workshop, we will be having our own kitchen party on Tuesday (Dec. 21st) in the gym! We will dress as mummers, play our handmade instruments, dance and listen to a live band. It's going to be a time!
It has been an absolute pleasure hosting 700 mummers this month. If you haven't already, please ask your child about this activity - We had so much fun and we're sure they would love to tell you about it.
Over 40 Postcards arrived today - Thanks to everyone for making this project such a success so far.
Our first round of postcards have arrived - Our family and friends are to thank for getting the word out!
We are learning about places all over the world and could use some help. Please take a look at our postcard and share with your friends and family living abroad. This is going to be a wonderful opportunity for the students of Riverside to learn about our world.
A little "Book Nook" is set up outside of the office.
This is a free book exchange that students are encouraged to use during their free time.
The point of this is for students (and teachers) to take books and donate their unwanted ones.
Ideally, our school community will work together to make sure the book nook is well stocked and books are getting into the hands of students.
"Between 1879 and 1996, the Government of Canada took First Nations, Métis, and Inuit kids away from their families and homes and put them in residential schools. At residential school, kids were not allowed to speak their language or celebrate their culture and were often treated badly by the adults in charge of the schools. Many of the children who went to residential schools became sick and died because the schools were poorly built and didn’t get enough money from the Government of Canada to keep the kids healthy. The kids who survived residential school returned home with a great sadness and hurt that has been passed on to current generations."
-First Nations Child & Family Caring Society of Canada
Today take time to learn about what happened and try to help. Some problems seem big and hard to fix, but the first step in fixing a problem is believing you can.
Swing by the Learning Commons to checkout some wonderful books on this important topic or feel free to explore our virtual learning space below.
Last year we were happy to announce that Leah was the 2nd place winner in a Canadian writing contest. Her published book has arrived and you can now find it in our library - AUTOGRAPHED!
We are all so proud. Way to go Leah!
Leah plans to use her prize money to buy books for our library - How wonderful is that!?
We are all looking forward to the start of a new school year.
Below is a wonderful comic created last year by Riverside's very own Felicity P. This comic shows the character Ella getting ready for her first day of school, finding her class, meeting her teacher and seeing all her friends. Hopefully this is how the first day of school goes for all of you junior Raptors.
See you soon! We can't wait to hear all about your summer!
Remember, even if we aren't in school, you can still learn something new everyday. Enjoy your well deserved summer break!
With the help and hard work of Ms. Sullivan, all these hard working writers are now published authors. You will be able to check out these awesome books next September in our Riverside Library Learning Commons.
Way to go everyone!
Thank you to Brilliant Labs for funding our Ozobots. Students had fun creating towns and villages to drive their Ozobots. These bots added extra fun and learning to the project and we look forward to using them in the coming years.

Association of New Canadians
Black History Month - Art Contest
Hey Riverside Raptors,
Hope you enjoyed learning more about these inspirational people of colour in the links above.
If you are interested in completing a piece of art for this contest, ask yourself what black history means to you? Do you want your creation to be about anti racism, black lives matter, famous black inventors/singers/athletes. It can be about anything that you feel is important about black history.
Email your submissions to: courtneyprince@nlesd.ca or clarenville@ancnl.ca
Sending out a huge virtual high five to some wonderful writers here at Riverside. The following students have had their entries selected in the first round of judging in the Polar Expressions - Student Writing Contest:

As we shift to online learning, please take note of the following point made by our province's Chief Medical Health Officer, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald during her February 10th briefing:
Before posting online "remember the acronym THINK. Is it True, is it Helpful, is it Inspiring, is it Necessary or is it Kind?"
This week, students in grade 4 Hawkins are learning about Rhyming, Cinquain and Haiku poems. They are then using the green screen app to compile pictures and poems to produce their valentines. They're turning out wonderfully; the students, Ms. Hawkins and I, FELL in love with this project.
This week Kindergarten, Grade 1 & 2 students have been working with the Bee-Bots. The groups have been working on coding the Bee-Bots to complete a variety of un-BEE-lievably fun activities. Everyone was a buzz with excitement as we worked with patterning, identifying 3D shapes and story retelling.
The Clarenville Lions Club just gave Riverside $600 for new books.
Here is a picture of a couple of the titles I managed to photograph before they flew off the shelves. All books were based on student requests and are making many students in the building very happy. A big thank you to the Clarenville Lions Club for the generous donation!
To say this has been an exciting week in the Learning Commons would be an understatement. We were able to take the children on a Christmas adventure! The kindergarten to grade 3 students hopped aboard the Polar Express for an exciting train ride.
Conductor Mr. Hackett enthusiastically punched each ticket before students could "ride" the train to the Library ("ALL ABOARD!"). Once there, the wonderful guidance team, Mrs. Primmer and Mrs. Billard-Penney served up delicious cookies and hot chocolate before the students were whisked away to the North Pole!
Mrs. Monk, Mrs. Fillier, some helpful grade 6 students and I then joined Mr. Hackett and performed a reader's theater of this beautiful story. The Learning Commons was on wheels! (get it!?)
Please ask your child about this experience as I am certain it was a memorable one.
Personally, it was one of my favorite activities to date. It was truly magical to ride the Polar Express with the students of Riverside Elementary. A huge thank you to all the staff that got on board (haha - get it?!) and made this possible. It's been an absolute pleasure working with everyone on this project.
In the words of one of the kindergarten students, "this made my heart feel soft".
Happy Holidays,
Ms. Prince
We changed the story slightly and the main character was a little girl - Mrs. Monk rocked her role and we were all so sad for her when she lost the first gift of Christmas (ask your child/tell your family what this was)
Mr. Hackett excitedly hollered "ALL ABOARD" at least 21 times a day for 6 days. How many times did he say it all together?
These cheerful and festive cooks and waiters made the best hot chocolate! It tasted just like melted chocolate bars!
Ms. Fillier working hard to make this train so pretty.
Mr. Spurrell had the great idea to build the engine on wheels! This made the train 100 times cooler because it could go "pick up" the students.

Today we were fortunate to have author Charis Cotter come for a virtual visit and share some of her spooky stories with the Elementary students.
Charis Cotter's fascination with ghosts has led her all across Newfoundland, looking for ghost stories and her enthusiasm and passion for these tales were certainly obvious throughout today's presentation.
Over the past two weeks, Charis Cotter's books and stories have inspired many of the grade 4-6 students to write their own spooky stories. There has been such wonderful writing taking place throughout our building and we have Charis to thank for the inspiration.
If you're looking to know more about Charis Cotter or to purchase one of her books, please check out her website:
If you'd like to revisit today's book 'Footsteps in Bay de Verde' please visit her publisher's website:

A huge shout out to Bella in Grade 5 who entered the Polar Expressions Student Writing Contest and was selected to have her story published. Bella gets a copy for herself and a book for our library - Feel free to check it out and read her wonderful story 'Rose and Jacob'
The copy that will stay in out library has been autographed by the author! Eeeek!
Here are all the details. Come and see Ms. Prince in the library for your entry form!
