Creating good reading habits at home can encourage a reader for life!
Reading habit #1: Finding a special reading spot!
Remember that reading should be FUN! So find a comfy chair, the corner of a couch, a cozy spot with a few pillows, a tent or a fort. Just a place where you can connect reading with coziness. Curl up with a favourite book or share a great story together with a family member.
Reading habit #2: Be a word detective!
Just look around your house, inside and outside, words are everywhere!! What words can you spy? Reading can be linked to activities such as reading rules to a game or reading a recipe. You will find yummy words in a recipe so try one out and taste it too!!
Reading habit #3: Keep some books in your car.
This is a great place to keep a few books to look at. Have a variety of books like comic books, graphic novels, joke books or even crossword puzzle books. Something to keep your mind busy if you end up in the car for awhile!
*You could keep books, magazines, newspapers, etc. all over your house. Keep some in the bathroom and living areas. Parents/caregivers can model good reading habits too! Show children that reading is a great way to spend some quality time.
Reading habit #4: Set a reading goal.
Set a reading goal for yourself. Maybe you want to try to read more words. Maybe you want to increase your fluency. Maybe you want to work on understanding the book or even keeping up your stamina while reading. Set a goal for reading and work towards it!
Reading habit #5: Talk, talk, talk about books or what you read.
Talking about the book you are reading is a great way to help with prediction and understanding as you get into the story. It can help to think a little deeper about a story's message as well. Share what books you are reading with someone at home. What are you learning about while reading?
Reading tip #6: Read a story aloud or have someone read aloud to you.
Did you know that reading stories aloud can help with your fluency? Read with expression and use different voices. This is sure to bring a few smiles! Listen to others reading and notice how they read with expression. Try a little readers theatre and assign parts to family at home.
Reading tip #7: Read a variety of books.
See how many different genres of books you can read. Do you have a favourite type of book? I love to read biographies( books about people) and books that help me, help with reading! My favourite fantasy book is definitely the Harry Potter series! Share your favourite types of books with your teachers and friends!
Reading tip #8: Be a voracious reader! Read, read, read!!
Try to get into a routine of reading each day. Our family enjoys reading in the evenings. It’s a great way to settle down after all day. Sometimes we read to each other and sometimes we read to ourselves. We love sharing what we have read...especially if it’s comical!
