At the end of this lesson, you will be able to manage the activities available in Google Meet to enhance your video call.
Google Meet has an array of activities available for you to add increased interactivity to your video call. These can be accessed by clicking the shapes in the bottom right corner. The five activities you can do are:
Breakout Rooms - this feature allows the hosts to put participants in small groups for discussion and navigate between them.
Polls - this feature allows the hosts to take a poll of all participants. This data will be saved for future discussion.
Q & A - this question and answer feature allows participants to ask questions of the hosts. Hosts will be able to mark the questions as answered.
Recording - this feature allows hosts to record the meeting for future reference. All participants will be notified they are being recorded.
Whiteboarding - this feature allows participants and hosts to use Google Jamboard to collaboratively brainstorm and sketch ideas.
Read below for more details and to see videos of the activities in action!
Breakout rooms can be managed by the hosts. Breakout rooms in Meet give the host the ability to divide participants into separate smaller Meets for group discussion or group work. Hosts can navigate between rooms, bring everyone back to the main call and set a timer. Participants in a room can ask for help if needed.
Polls are another activity that can be managed by the host. Polls allows for the host to ask a question for participants to answer. Hosts can choose whether or not to share the group's results with the group. Individual poll answers will be e-mailed to the original host of the meeting.
Q&A is an activity that allows for participants to ask and up-vote questions for the host to address during the Meet. Hosts can mark the questions as answered or delete them. Hosts can toggle this on or off at opportune times.
You are able to record Meets for future reference. This can only be done by hosts and the recording will be saved in Google Drive and you will receive an email when it is done processing. All participants will be notified they are being recorded and you will be prompted to ask permission from all before recording.
Whiteboarding uses Google Jamboard for collaborative brainstorming or to sketch out ideas. You can start a new Jamboard or open one already in your Drive. Once you add a Jamboard, it will prompt you to choose whether you want all participants to be able to edit the whiteboard or only to view.
Now, start a Meet and navigate to the activities and give them a try. If you are able, invite some participants to your Meet to see how they would interact with the activities.
