This year I will be using some components of WORDS THEIR WAY which is a developmental word study in action model for helping young kids learn to spell properly. It is about seeing patterns in words rather than recognizing individual words. They will be sorting words in different ways such as alphabet (basic beginner level), pattern (groupings of letters and sounds) and meaning (learning the meaning of groups of letters which is where vocabulary truly increases). Students will be working on different types of WORD SORTS based on their level. This will be occurring during our literacy block in our classroom. In order to learn more about WORDS THEIR WAY and WORD SORTS, you can read this parent brochure.
You can help your child at home by reviewing the word work sent home. The purpose of this review work is to reinforce the WORD SORTS we are doing at school and increase their confidence, letter formations and general recall. Please refer to the spelling menus in your child's DOT binder for different suggestions and strategies to assist with new words. Its worth noting, the spelling menus foster different learning styles. There will be some strategies more effective for your child than others as we all retain info. differently. Find what works for your son or daughter and go with it!
Please check your son/daughter's agenda for additional math games and skill reinforcement. In addition, please remind your child to share their D (daily) O(organizational) T(tool) binders with you daily.
Remember to read, write and count every day!
Students will receive 6 new words each Monday. As a class we chose 4 words together which go under class words. These words are usually strategically selected and usually focus on either a spelling pattern, specific vowel sound or consonant chunk or blend. (such as "ing" or "th"). Students should choose 2 personal challenge words and copy them down under "My Words". This gives them an opportunity to learn how to spell words they are interested in. There will be times throughout the year where students will be asked to complete small home projects or additional practice on a specific writing expectation. There will be no new word work for those occasions. In addition, each student will have a RAZ kids account for reading, recording and responding to online books. EVERY DAY WE HAVE AN ASK ME QUESTION which we choose as a class and upload to our website at the end of the day.
