We are happy to be back and wishing good health and prosperity to all in 2026!
Our Vanier Elves worked very hard before the break and we wish to acknowledge their kindness, as well as thank all who donated or helped in any way to make 'Project Elf' a wonderful success. Our Vanier Happy Tree is a source of great pride in spreading kindness each Christmas season. Mme Sara Bassan, Ms. Alison Parrell, Ms. Debbie Shortall and Ms. Stephanie King led the way, along with a team of helpers. To the Hyde Family (Darrin, Jackie and Seth), thank you for giving back to our school community so generously with your time, and ensuring we have just the right tree for our Sing-A-Long. We also thank MHAs Bernard Davis and John Hogan and their team for arranging hot chocolate for our students and staff following our tree lighting, and Mr. Hatcher and Ms. Hurley for all your help.
We congratulate Mr. Doucet and our Primary (Gr. 1 - Gr. 3) classes for your wonderful ARF! on the Housetop musical! It was a celebration that ended with a donation to the SPCA as well as a real-life pup finding a home just in time for Christmas!
We congratulate Ms. Katie Sullivan and our Grade 6 Band on the excellent showcase of talent and hard work of our musicians before the break.
We welcome Ms. Taylor Barter, Student Assistant to our school. We also have two MUN Interns joining us at Vanier: Mlle Emily Dominic - 2F, and Mlle Joey Champdoizeau - 6F. Welcome Emily and Joey!
Bell Let's Talk Day will be Wednesday, January 21. This year's theme is taking a moment for mental health.
January 27 is Family Literacy Day in Canada. The theme this year is Make Meal Time Family Learning Time. More information on Family Literacy Day can be found at this link.
This will be held during the second week in February. We hope that students and families can take a moment to write a note to tell a teacher or staff member why they are appreciated. This goes far on a week where we celebrate our staff!
Pink Shirt Day is coming! It will be held on February 25th. Further details will be sent home closer to the date. Students are invited to wear a pink on that day. If families would like to purchase a pink shirt, or other pink apparel, we have the local store at this link , and they will deliver to the school in time for Pink Shirt Day. Please make your selection by January 28 and use the AVALON section. Please note, an 'official' pink shirt is not a requirement, and any pink shirt or pink clothing item acknowledges the anti-bullying message of this day.
The D.A.R.E. Program runs in our school in Grade 6, and is an excellent partnership with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and NLSchools. This message comes to you from our NL Regional D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Committee who work to secure donations for the program in our regions:
As you are likely aware, this program is only possible because of the continued support of the community. This year, we are especially fortunate to have the support of The Regiment. The primary theme of the D.A.R.E program is teaching good decision- making skills to youth and building positive relationships. The Regiment are strong supporters of this message, and for that reason have chosen to support the program locally.
D.A.R.E Night at The Regiment is scheduled for Thursday, January 15that 7 PM. We’d like to offer you the opportunity to purchase tickets at a rate of $20! (For every ticket sold, $5 will be donated to the committee).
We are hopeful your school community will join us in supporting this fundraising event! Show your spirit by wearing your school colors! Remember to choose what D.A.R.E school you are supporting on the Northeast Avalon as the school generating the most support will have the opportunity to enjoy a surprise event at a later date!
Tickets are available at the highlighted link below (Use your mouse to right click and open).
Thank you for your support of our D.A.R.E Program!
Grenfell Campus Extended Learning is offering the Home Alone program virtually. The Home Alone Program from the Canada Safety Council is designed to provide children (10 years of age or older) with the necessary skills and knowledge to be safe and responsible when home alone for short periods of time. It will help them understand how to prevent problems, handle real-life situations, and keep them safe and constructively occupied. The program focuses on group discussions, problem solving, role-playing, and instructor-led demonstrations. The course is approximately 3 hours in length and the material covers such topics as establishing a routine, house key responsibility, strangers, emergencies, basic first aid, and internet safety. Virtual session: January 19 & 21, 2026 6:30PM-8:00PM; $69 +HST; Register online here (Visa or Mastercard only). Please note, only the virtual program is available for our region at this time. *Requirements for online program: A smartphone, tablet or PC with internet access and an internet browser (or the Webex app) and audio/video capabilities.
For students participating in our Grade 5/6 Band Program, there is a fee of $50 required for maintenance of instruments. This fee can be paid through Rycor, and will be available on Rycor on Tuesday.
Thank you for support of our Vanier Clothing Order. There were some items on back order which will be delivered when available.
In the event of inclement weather and school closures, information is shared in various ways as below (please note, we are part of the Metro School System]:

Email alerts/updates [please let the school know if you do not receive our regular messages]
Families are reminded that our doors open at 8:20, and classes begin promptly at 8:30. Students should be in class and ready to learn at that time. We recognize that there can be occasional things that come up in the morning; however frequent occurrences really need further consideration. Please consider the importance of being present, time on task and instructional time. We love to see our students grow and get the very most out of the learning time they share at school. We thank you for your help in having all of our students in class and on time.
Lifetouch has sent information regarding the Cap and Gown photos that will be taken on January 15th. Please check your child's bag for this brochure, and information on an optional composite picture. We will provide the proofs and information when they are received.
Thank you to all who have come forward to offer gently used clothing for students who may be in need of items - snow pants, coats, hats, boots, sneakers, sweaters, pants, etc. Donations are gratefully accepted at the Office. Thank you to Ms. Alison Parrell who gives regularly of her time to ensure that the Vanier Vault is organized and ready to be used. We are grateful for everyone's help in stocking these shelves!
We go outdoors to play and to learn whenever we can. Fresh air and activity are so important to good health and we believe in taking advantage of our grounds and being active. Please ensure that students are ready to go outside with everything they need to stay dry and comfortable. Thank you for your help!
Our first KinderStart Session will be January 30. There will be a session in the gymnasium for adults and a session in the classroom for our new students. We look forward to meeting the Sea Stars, Graduating Class of 2038 - 39!!! There is no school for our regular Kindergarten students on KinderStart days.
Please note, students are not permitted to ride busses to which they have not been assigned. If you are regularly or occasionally putting your child on a bus that is not assigned, or not at their designated bus stop, this is in violation of the transportation policy. There is an option to apply for a Courtesy Seat through the policy. For safety reasons it is vital that we are aware of all students who ride a bus, and that students are not getting on busses without administration/bus drivers' knowledge. Thank you for your understanding. Please get in touch with tinamaloney@nlschools.ca if you wish to apply for Courtesy Seating.
Renovations have been completed for this program, and the room has been furnished. Vanier will be part of the next phase of the provincial implementation of the Pre-Kindergarten program. We will advise when we have further details regarding the launch of this program. Information about the Pre-K Program can be found at https://www.gov.nl.ca/education/pre-kindergarten/ .
