Holiday Countdown Starts on Monday!

We look forward to counting down to the holidays! Please check the calendar to the left for our special theme days that start on Monday, December 4th. Students are invited to participate as we enjoy the days leading up to the break! Vanier will close on Wednesday, December 20th. We will have an early dismissal at 12:30. We will reopen on Tuesday, January 2nd. We take this opportunity to wish all of our families a wonderful holiday.

News from Vanier

Over the past few weeks, we welcomed the Conservation Corps (Gr. 5) and Junior Achievement (Gr. 3 & 4) to our school, and our Gr. 2 classes attended the Fluvarium (Gr. 2). These are wonderful programs in our community that support our learning in the classroom and we greatly appreciate these partnerships. We also celebrated the harvest of our Vanier Garden on Soup Day. Please read on for all our news and upcoming events at Vanier!

Vanier 5-6 Choir Performs with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra!

Our Grade 5 and 6 students, under the direction of M. Adrien Doucet and Ms. Ashley Cook became part of a mass choir this month, joining with Brookside Intermediate and Holy Heart to sing with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra on the Main Stage at the Arts and Culture Centre! This required a practice with the Symphony at the theatre as well as an evening dress rehearsal. We are very proud of the hard work and performance of our students in this event!

Soup Day 2023

Our Vanier Garden Volunteers, Minister Bernard Davis, Minister John Hogan, Chef Nick Walters, Grade 6 Classes, Mr. Hugh Keenan all worked collaboratively to produce an amazing soup for our annual Soup Day! A bowl of soup was enjoyed by our students and staff, with some ingredients coming directly from our Vanier Garden. We thank The Merchant Tavern for hosting our Grade 6 Chef Team as they participated in prep work at the restaurant. Chef Nick's delicious recipe has been generously shared and can be found here!

Term 2 Begins

We thank families for meeting with us to review Term 1 Reports. Term 2 has begun and will end on March 8, 2024. Term 2 Reports will be issued on March 13, and early dismissal at 11:15 and Family-Teacher Conferences for Term 2 will take place on March 14.

Staffing Changes

We said goodbye to longtime staff member Mr. Sonny Monilla in November. Mr. Monilla was part of our evening custodial staff. We also said goodbye to Ms. Annette Bourgeois, who has been a Student Assistant with us since September. We wish you both the very best at your new schools and thank you for all your efforts at Vanier.

New - Ministerial PL Day - Date Announced

Our school will attend a professional learning session on Friday, February 9. There will be no school for students on this day. We will rearrange our February KinderStart session that was planned for this date and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our Kindergarten/KinderStart families.

KinderStart Dates

Kindergarten families are asked to note that there will be no school for Kindergarten students on Friday, January 12 to facilitate our first KinderStart session. Our February date will be finalized soon; other dates are listed at the left.

Vanier Elves/Helpers Project

Thank you to all who have come forward to assist us with helping families in our community at this special time of year. Our efforts are led by Mme Sara Bassan and a team of staff members who are working diligently to make spirits bright this holiday season. If you would like to make a donation of a gift or gift card, please touch base with Mme Bassan or the Office. We would also like to thank former parent Mr. Darren Hyde, who helps us each year find a wonderful outdoor tree.

Remembrance Day Assembly

Our Remembrance Day Assembly was held on November 10. It was led by our grade six students to honour veterans and help spread the message of peace, and included poignant musical selections and presentations by our students. Each class in the school prepared a wreath which was placed by class representatives during the assembly, and our grade six classes presented songs and information. We were happy to welcome Gr. 6 families to the assembly. In a very fitting gesture, following the ceremony, Mme Daly brought the class wreaths to the Martyrs of Gallipoli Monument located at the Trail of the Caribou Memorial Park where they were temporarily placed. We thank Mme Daly, Ms. Costello, Mr. Doucet, Ms. Cook, Gr. 6 students who organized and led this wonderful assembly, and sharing their learning with the school.

School Council Update

Our School Council is planning fundraisers to help with our goal of providing resources for our school. Stay tuned for exciting plans to come!

Council is currently requesting gift cards for one of our fundraisers. If you have been holding on to a gift card that is not getting used, or wish to donate a gift card, please send along to the office to the attention of our School Council. Thank you!
