Throughout Atlantic Canada, there are increased opportunities in technology industries. Students should be aware of the career trends that are currently emerging in their region and the requirements to establish a career in this sector of the labor market.

There is an increase in the number of companies that are now operating in the technology sector in Newfoundland and Labrador. Many of these companies are being recognized globally. Students should be aware of some of the innovative companies and the solutions that are being developed in this province.

As people become more dependent on technology in everyday life, students need to be more aware of how to safely use technology. Points to emphasize include: sharing personal information, passwords, psychological/physiological effects and ergonomics.

Students should be aware of legal and ethical issues when using technology. Emphasize unethical behaviours related to plagiarism, copyright and the creation of malicious code.

Students will be introduced to the idea that they are surrounded by a variety of technological systems. Using the Universal Systems Model, students will think critically about the systems they use on a daily basis.

Emphasize how computer hardware has changed over time. Topics that could be highlighted include:rigins of the first computer, the invention of the first digital computer influence of war and the space race, development of the integrated circuit, emergence of the personal computer and the development of the smartphone.
