A Visit to The Gathering Place

June 6th, 2017

Do you have any extra footwear you no longer need? If so, we are gathering footwear to send along to The Gathering Place. They are in desperate need of all footwear but especially men's size 7,8,9,10 and 11!

Our students visited The Gathering Place on June 4th and we realized that many people avail of their services on a daily basis. During our visit, our Grade 8 students and student council members, along with Mrs Green, Mrs Gillingham and Mrs O'Leary helped unpack, sort and put away over 20 boxes that were donated from St. Pierre and Miquelon.

We are hoping to send along at least 100 pairs of shoes before the end of the year!

Your small act of kindness will make a difference in the life of somebody!

Parent/Guardian Memo

Just a reminder to complete this if you haven't had a chance. The deadline is extended to May 31, 2017.

The note below is from The Department of Education

May 25, 2017

Subject: Request for Feedback – Family Survey

Dear Parent/Guardian,

This year, the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development is launching new annual school development surveys to replace previous school development and school climate surveys. The new surveys were designed and tested for reliability and validity by Panorama Education and researchers at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education, and are currently being used by over 7,000 schools in 15+ countries. The Department piloted the surveys using online survey administration in five schools in Fall 2016, and the feedback from the pilot was used to make adjustments to the survey instruments.

The results of the Family Survey will help schools better understand the perceptions of the parents/ guardians in their school community. Together with feedback from students and staff, the survey data will help schools to identify strengths and areas for growth as they engage in school development.

The survey is anonymous, which means that we cannot connect your survey responses to you. We encourage everyone to participate so that we have the most accurate representation of family perceptions at your school.

Please complete the Family Survey by May 31, 2017 by clicking on the following link: https://www.research.net/r/SDFamilyEN. If you do not have internet access, you may contact your school to arrange access to a school computer or mobile device for survey completion.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the new school development surveys, please contact:

Jennifer Smith at 709-729-5588 or jenniferfsmith@gov.nl.ca or

Patricia Emberley at 709-729-6850 or patriciaemberley@gov.nl.ca

Thank you for your participation and for being a valued member of your school community.

Sincerely,

Our Multi -Purpose Field

December 2, 2016

As you can see from the pictures we’ve posted there has been significant progress on our Multi – Purpose field this fall. This is a project that we have been considering for quite some time but have only recently been able to get moving.

The funding for the project so far (a total of $17,500.00) has come from three different sources. We received a donation of $5000.00 from the committee that was established a number of years ago when the Provincial Government was introducing Caribou to the Bay de Verde Peninsula. This money was raised by the students in a number of schools in our area but was never used by the government and the committee wanted to see it returned to the school students in the area for their use. We had $9000.00 donated to our school in memory of Brandon Harris to be used to benefit all students in such a way that promoted physical education. We have also received $3500.00 from the provincial government which was made up of a $500.00 cheque when we started talking about the project a while ago and a $3000.00 grant that was received last spring.

This budget, and the generosity of the businesses involved in the work so far, has allowed us to complete the initial ground work and install the fence. Hopkins Services started the project for us by doing the initial excavation and preparation of the ground. The fencing materials were provided to the project from Hindy’s Home Hardware in Winterton at cost. The cement used to install the posts for the fence was provided by Concrete Products. The installation of the fence was completed by Strainers Mash, Mr. Bill Power.

Each of these businesses are to be commended for their support. In total, through the giving of their time, materials and use of equipment, they have actually donated the equivalent of $7500.00 to the project.

The support has been amazing and we hope that it will continue as we move to the next phase of the project in the spring. Our plan is to have a very large sodded area in the center and a 200 meter track around the edge of the field. In order to complete the project we will first of all need to compact the existing fill all over the field. Then, to complete the sodded area we will need to add a thick layer of topsoil, fertilize and prepare the soil and then finish this section with sods. The track around the perimeter of the field will be a gravel track. It will require a base layer of stone and then a layer of finer, maybe a Class A Stone, for the running surface.

This work will require a significant amount of money to complete. We are currently making application to the Provincial Government through the Department of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development for some funding to help with the cost. We have also been in contact with the office of The Honourable Judy Foote requesting support from that level as well.

At this time we are also appealing to Businesses, Organizations and Individuals for their support by making a donation to The Brandon Harris Memorial Field Project. These donations will go towards the purchase of the remaining materials and labour required for completion. This is a very worthwhile project that will benefit students in the area for many years to come and will also provide a venue for people in our communities for walking and other outdoor activities.
