The Solar Physics Division of the American Astronomical Society was born in 1970, making the year 2020 the 50th anniversary of the division. The SPD Committee held a logo contest with a $100 cash prize for the best 50th-year SPD logo, and we received four entries by the deadline of March 27, 2020. It was a difficult decision given the wonderful entries, but the SPD Committee has selected a design by Ignacio Ugarte-Urra (at the Naval Research Lab) as shown at this link (one example is shown at left). This is a preliminary design pending possible updates as we contemplate the various ways the logo will be used.

We plan to use the winning logo for a pin that will be made available at our 2020 SPD meeting, and also for advertising our 50th year as an organization. Please join me in congratulating Ignacio. The prize will be presented at the 2020 meeting.
