OVSA Summer School & Workshop 2025
July 21-23, 2025, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, NJ
July 21-23, 2025, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, NJ
The inaugural Owens Valley Solar Arrays (OVSA) Summer School and Workshop will be held from July 21 to July 23, 2025 at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). OVSA is an integrated community facility supported by the National Science Foundation. It includes the Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA) operating in the microwave regime (1-18 GHz), as well as the solar and space weather aspects of the newly commissioned Long Wavelength Array at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO-LWA), which operates in the meter-decameter wavelength regime (13-87 MHz).
Participants will engage with a combination of lectures, practical tutorials, and science sessions. Topics will include: 1) Fundamentals of radio interferometry, antenna/receiver/digital systems, calibration and synthesis imaging, radio emission processes, and spectral diagnostics; 2) Introduction to OVSA instrumentation, data products, and hands-on tutorials; 3) Presentations of related science results. Participants will also gain experience with data analysis tools commonly used in the radio and solar physics community, particularly Python-based workflows. Experienced researchers and OVSA team members will lead the lectures and tutorials.
Anyone who is interested in using solar radio data in their research is encouraged to attend. No prior experience with radio data is required, though a background in solar/space physics is helpful. All the data tutorials will be based on Python/Jupyter Notebook. Some experience with Python programming is recommended.
Free registration and (optional) abstract submission will be due on June 30. A limited amount of travel support will be available, which will be prioritized to support students and early career scientists. The registration form includes an option to request travel support. To be considered, registration and the travel support application must be submitted by June 30. For more information and to register for the meeting, please visit the Registration page.
Virtual participation in lectures, science talks, and certain tutorials will be provided via Zoom for registered participants. However, we highly recommend in-person participation.
A tentative program can be found on the Program page, which is subject to change until early July. Please check back often.

The workshop will be held on the NJIT campus in the Agile Strategy Lab (Room L-70), located on the first floor of the Central King Building (CKB).
The CKB is situated near the intersection of MLK Jr. Blvd and Warren Street, adjacent to Fenster Hall. When entering the NJIT campus from Warren Street, the CKB will be on your right. The location is highlighted by a red star on the marked-up map.
The most convenient hotel is the Best Western Robert Treat Hotel, 15-min walk from the NJIT campus and ~10-min walk from the Newark Penn Station (if you travel by train). NJIT has a contract with the hotel with special pricing, $135 + tax. We may book a hotel room for you. Please contact Dr. Xingyao Chen (xingyao.chen at njit.edu) and Ms. Cheryl James (cheryl.james at njit.edu. 973-596-5736) for assistance.
Newark is served by the Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), 5-6 miles away from the Robert Treat Hotel and NJIT campus. It takes about 15-20 min if you ride by taxi or Uber. The hotel also provides shuttles from/to the Newark airport. Detailed information can be found at their webpage.
Traveling by train is also very convenient. The Robert Treat Hotel is within walking distance (~10 min) from the Newark Penn Station, a major train hub here serving Amtrak, NJ Transit, Newark Light Rail, and PATH (to Manhattan). The Hotel also provides shuttle from/to Newark Penn Station.
There are two parking decks on campus (see map below). If you choose to arrive by car, please contact Dr. Xingyao Chen (xingyao.chen at njit.edu), who will reserve a parking space for you in the main parking deck (marked as parking deck #1 in the map below) on Warren St. Note the street (Summit Street) in front of the parking deck is an one-way road. You have to drive in from Colden St and turn back to Summit St, as shown by the orange arrow on the map. When you arrive at the gate, just ring the buzzer and tell the operator that you have reserved guest parking, and he/she will let you in.
