Our goal is to understand, from a theoretical perspective, the thermodynamics and kinetics of nanoscale artificial systems that mimic life-like behavior and function reliably in noisy environments. We develop analytical models and perform computer simulations to predict the properties of these systems. Since such small-scale systems typically operate far from thermodynamic equilibrium, we use tools from non-equilibrium statistical mechanics to analyze the underlying processes.
