When: Monday, March 25th 4:00pm - 6:00/6:30pm
Transportation to Event: Kids will be departing by bus from SRE between 1:30 - 1:45 to go to Carter Elementary.
Competition Parent Pick-up / Transporation Home: Events are staggered and end at different times. You will be contacted via Parent Square if your child is ready for pick-up at Carter. You must sign out with Mrs. Casey or Mrs. Bennett to take your child home from the event. Remaining students will be bussed back to SRE at the end of all events for parent pick-up at school. There is not an exact time but probably between 6:00 and 6:30pm. Updates will be sent via Parent Square.
Parent entry will be at the front of the building only. You are welcome to join us after 3:30pm so that Carter can finish their regular dimissal procedures.
Look for Mrs. Casey or Mrs. Bennett to sign out your child at pick-up
Students should wear their school UIL shirts with the exception of Oral Reading and Story Telling.
Students are not allowed to take any items into the testing room, including phones or any other technology. Students will take their backpacks with them to Carter and backpacks, so please plan accordingly to protect your child's items.
Parents are allowed to come wait in the holding area. In accordance with UIL rules, parents and spectators MAY NOT attend or view events.
UIL results and rankings will be available about two weeks after the competition.
Students are welcome to bring a book, small card games (Ex: Uno), coloring books or other small items that they can carry in their backpack. We will have some time for the kids to study, snack, and relax before the competition starts.
Our nurse is sending emergency medications (inhalers, epi-pens, etc) for students that have these items in the clinic.
SRE is providing snacks bags for our kids to take to the competition.
Students may bring their own snacks.
Snacks will be available for purchase. Please send cash.

Can I watch my child's event?
In accordance with UIL rules, only students and judges are allowed in the event rooms. Parents may wait in the cafeteria area with event sponsors.
When will my child be done?
Events are staggered and have different lengths of time. You will be notified by Parent Square when events have ended or will approximately end. Students not picked up at the conclussion of the competition will ride the bus back to SRE for pick-up at the front.
How do I pick up my child?
You will need to sign out with your child with Ms. Bennett or Ms. Casey. As this is a school field trip, we are accountable for the kids and their safety. Please bring a photo ID.
What if my child is sick on UIL day?
UIL is a date specific competition and studets must be present at school to participate in the event. Students CANNOT be dropped off at the event if they were not present at school.
How do I contact Mrs. Casey or someone at the event?
Please use Parent Square to message Jennifer Casey, UIL Coordinator. I will be the onsite contact for the event. You can also reach out to your child's UIL coach via Parent Square.
Yikes! I am running late for pick-up!
At the conclusion of the UIL events (approximately 6:00 - 6:15), all remaining students will ride the bus back to SRE for pick-up at the front of the school. We will not be able to wait for parents to arrive at Carter.
UIL (University Interscholastic League) is an opportunity for students to compete in academic areas. Events are offered by grade level and there are several to choose from. Want to learn more UIL? Click here to go to the official website.
Practices will held from afterschool on Wednesdays until 4:15. All UIL students will go with their grade level dismissal lines to the gym to wait with the car riders. This provides a safe, monitored place for students to wait for the coaches to finish their duty and start practice.
All pick-up will be at the FRONT of the school at 4:15. Students will exit the front doors with their coaches. Car riders will load into cars. Walkers and bikers will walk their regular routes.

The spelling contest is designed to give students exposure to a wide variety of vocabulary words. It is not a contest of memorization. For the most educational value, preparation for this contest should include instruction in the rules of the English language, meanings and definitions, and root words.

The contest is designed to promote creativity in an academic format and to encourage writing skills at an early grade level. Contestants will be given a prompt with several captioned pictures. From these pictures, students will create an original story based on their selections in 30 minutes.

The listening contest is designed to help students in recognize the importance of effective listening skills and to identify problems they may have in listening effectively. Through preparation for the contest, participants will listen actively to a variety of material and learn to analyze and evaluate a speaker's message critically. Contestants will listen to a script ranging from seven to ten minutes in length, take notes as needed, and use their notes to answer 25 multiple choice, true/false and short answer test questions.

To tell a story, the participant must develop skills in listening, thinking and speaking. This contest also allows for the development of creative expression, something being given more attention in the professional world. Contestants listen to a storyteller read a brief story (between 600 and 1100 words long) only once, and then retell that story in their own words before a judge or judges.

Students read a selection of poetry. Each selection may be one poem, a cutting of a poem, or a combination of poems. Reading literature out loud provides opportunities for students to analyze the text, to grow and to develop as a performer, to communicate a message to an audience and to perform an artistic creation.

The maps, graphs & charts contest is designed to help students learn to get information from a variety of maps, graphs and charts including world maps, pie charts, bar charts and local area maps. The objective test will measure skills such as using a reference book to locate information, making comparisons, estimating and approximating, using scale and interpreting grid systems, legends and keys.
Students will be given an objective test containing approximately 75 multiple choice and true/false questions, which must be answered in 45 minutes.

Students will be given a 10-minute, fill-in-the-blank test which they must complete without doing calculations on paper or on a calculator. Erasures and mark-outs are not permitted.

Contestants are given a choice between two prompts which defines the audience and provides the purpose for writing. Various writing strategies may be stated or implied in the prompt. Some of these include: description to inform, narration, or persuasion.

Chess Puzzles
2, 3, 4, 5
Chess teaches problem solving, hones concentration and encourages analytical and strategic thinking. Chess puzzle competition is very different from tournament chess play. Contestants receive a paper-and-pencil test that includes a series of chess boards with pieces in particular positions. Questions are based on analysis of material or possible moves in each given diagram.

Q: There is an event my child has previously participated in but is not listed. Can my child join an event not offered?
A: If an event is not listed above, is not being offered this year. We hope to have these events return next year!
Q: How many kids can be on a team?
A: Any number of kids can join a team! In the event of more than 3 kids per team, try-outs will be held to determine which 3 kids will compete. Try-out information will be communicated by coaches to kids and parents.
Q: Can I see my student compete?
A: In accordance with UIL rules, no spectators are allowed in the competition rooms. You are welcome to join us at the competition before or after it starts. But parents must remain in the cafeteria to cheer on and support their kids.
Q: My child wants to do EVERYTHING! Can she compete in more than one event?
A: Elementary UIL Rules state that a child may only compete in one event.
