Welcome Back- IT Newsletter
The videos below outline the new Technology Safeguards for Northwest ISD. It is recomended that you view your grade level video to ensure you are aware of how these safeguards may impact your classroom and students.
Additional information can be found at screentime.nisdtx.org.
What you've used in the past may no longer be available this year because our expectations for digital tools have evolved. Educational games will be blocked by default for teachers and students, unless they've been approved for instructional use. As a result, our list of accessible sites is being rebuilt based on current instructional needs and district guidelines. What does this mean?
Plan ahead: Many blocked resources may not be approved, even if previously available. Please have an alternative ready, especially for tools outside the adopted curriculum.
Approval Process: Submit a Helpdesk ticket under the "Unblock a Site" category. Having a direct link from your curriculum fast-tracks the approval process. Education Games not included in curriculum go through 3 layers of approval which takes time to process.
What sites are currently available at your grade band? See below:
Can students access this?
Go to the website you want to check access for, then-
Click the Access Scan extension
The URL should automatically plug in
Enter a student email at the grade band you want to verify access for
Click the button to "Check Student Access"

PreK - 5th grade: YouTube is blocked for independent student access at elementary. Teachers are able to show YouTube videos to the whole class.
6th - 12th grade: Both middle school and high school students are restricted to viewing Education Videos only.
DO:
Use the AccessScan extension to see if a video is viewable by students in your grade band
A student's email must be entered for the correct status to show.
Since EdPuzzle sources their videos from YouTube, you can test if a video will be accessible in the EdPuzzle assignment by seeing it if it available in YouTube.
If you believe the filter may have been wrong in it's classification of a video, submit a ticket under "unblock a site" category to request the video be reclassified.
DO NOT: Use the banner below the video showing "Watchable by nisdtx.org." That banner cannot be disabled with the version of Google for Education that we have and may show conflicting avialability as shown below.
No email access
NISD students in grades 3–8 can only email NISD staff and their guardians/emergency contacts.
The Parent/Guardian approval list is populated based off of the email address we have on file in HAC. If they use a different email address, their message will be blocked.
Only one email address can be listed for each parent/guardian. Parents/guardians can see the email address currently listed for them in HAC under Contacts.
If a parent needs assistance in making these changes, guide them to the elementary office managers and middle school registrars
If a parent/guardian needs to change their email address, they can
send the request from the email address currently on file
have another parent/guardian send the request from an email address currently on file
come to the campus in person.
No change in email access; continue to send and receive from all contacts
PreK-1 students' time on devices should be limited strictly to no more than 20 minutes per day of device use.
This is intended to provide a boundary for clarity regarding time on devices as is age appropriate. We are monitoring numbers at this grade band in order to keep an eye on trends and needs. The device will not shut down automatically once 20 minutes of time on the device has occurred. For questions
