Be Safe
Be Respectful
Be Responsible
If your child has difficulty following the expectations, your child's teacher will make a note on his/her calendar in his/her take home binder. If the behavior continues, your child will bring home a “Think Sheet.” Please sign and return Think Sheets or calendar/planner the following day. These Think Sheets, as well as classroom observations will be considered for Conduct and Work Study Habits grades for the 9 weeks report cards.
Our three ring binder is designed to help students learn responsibility and organizational skills. Students are expected to have their binder at school daily! The binder will consist of several parts:
Nine Week/Reading Calendar: Students will record their daily reading minutes on their reading calendar.
Homework helps reinforce what has been learned in class, prepares students for upcoming lessons and tests, teaches responsibility, helps develop positive student habits, and in some situations, allows students extra time to complete unfinished class work. Homework may come home in different formats, including unfinished work, extra skill practice, and reading log.
Reading Log:
Each week students will be expected to read 100 minutes. This can be spread out over the week and weekend to fit your child’s needs. Reading minutes should be record on the back of the 9 week calendar in your child's binder.
Unfinished Work:
Class time will be given for independent daily practice; however, if your child has been given extended time in class but still has unfinished work, it may come home to be completed. This unfinished daily work will be due the next school day.
Extra Skill Practice:
Extra practice may come if the teacher sees a concern, or a child struggling with a certain concept.
Grading Policy:
We follow the Northwest ISD district guidelines for grades. Please refer to the student handbook for more details.
Elementary Grading Guide Lines
Citizenship Grades:
Citizenship grades will be determined by students’ daily behavior. Parents will be notified of any behavior concerns through communication from the child’s teacher. The teacher will keep track of behavioral concerns as well as work study habits, which will also reflect in their overall citizenship grade. Please note: MUSIC, ART and PE six-week citizenship grades are determined by those respective teachers and will be reported and calculated in an alternative form.
All students at Granger start with a “Satisfactory” citizenship grade. Students will be given the opportunity to earn an “Excellent” citizenship grade based on their daily work habits and behavior.
Please help your student understand that “Satisfactory” is a good achievement and means that they are on the right track. The majority of our students will likely fall in this category. If your child receives “Excellent” in any area, be sure to celebrate this with them. This a significant accomplishment and they have truly excelled in a specific area.

Water Bottles:
Spill-proof water bottles (flip-top) will be permitted. Please put your child’s name on the water bottle in permanent marker. Only water will be permitted in the bottles.
Snacks :
Your child may bring a snack to school. We ask that snacks are:
in individual portions
healthy
easy to open
easy to eat
easy to clean up
Please keep in mind the children will be eating their snack during instruction. Snacks that contain juice (fruit cups), that are hard to peel (oranges) and sticky can interfere with your child’s learning. In addition, due to allergies, some snacks may not be allowed in the classroom (i.e. peanut products are only allowed in the cafeteria). If this is the case, a letter will be sent home to notify you.
You may send individually packaged treats for a celebration in the classroom such as Little Debbie Snacks. Cupcakes or anything with icing is NOT allowed. All treats must be store bought , per district policy and individually packaged. You must send the treats to school with your child or drop them off in the office. If your child’s birthday falls on a weekend or holiday break, celebrations can take place during the school week. Also, district policy states that birthday invitations may not be passed out in class. They can be passed out after school, outside of the classroom.
If your child is riding home a different way than they usually do, please send a note or contact the office. Without a note or notice from the office, we will send your child home the way they normally go. For the safety of your student, we ask that any unexpected change in afternoon transportation be made no later than 2:00 p.m. Please call the office with the change and we will be notified. Email messages may not be received or checked in time.
The Student Handbook is located online at the NISD website. Please read through it carefully, as there is important information regarding attendance, tardies, grades, cell phones, electronic devices, dress codes and skateboards & scooters.
