Providing students prompts and questions for each icon is beneficial because it allows them to more specific in their thoughts about their text.
Character clocks allow students not only a chance to record their thoughts about the character, it also allows them to see those changes over time that they might not have observed otherwise. Any icon used in the text evidence denotes whether the evidence is from the character's perspective or the students.
This shows how the student took the attributes chart (above) and showed similarities and differences between two of the author study books.
Here's an example of a student who took ETHICS and wrote about a dilemma her character faced. She then discussed a dilemma that she is currently facing in the lunchroom.
Students use the D&C Icons to answer a PSB. They identify the details and unanswered questions they have about the problem, then they solve for the answer. Off to the side (not seen in photo) as all of the other icons. Students will choose 2 and relate them to the problem or their thinking.
