The ExCELLS Retreat for Young Scientists is organized primarily by early-career researchers affiliated with the Exploratory Research Center on Life and Living Systems (ExCELLS). The retreat aims to foster interaction among young researchers both within and outside ExCELLS and to cultivate the seeds of future interdisciplinary collaborations through shared retreat activities.
At this year’s retreat, we will organize group work sessions to develop joint research proposals under the theme of “interdisciplinary collaboration,” which is a hallmark of ExCELLS, while imagining the process of securing external funding. Through this program, we aim to foster cross-disciplinary interaction among young researchers.

Tips for writing grant proposals
Points to note when applying for interdisciplinary collaborative research
Group discussion (Language: Japanese/English)
Share Your Research and Connect!
This is a time to interact with each other using self-introduction cards prepared in advance.
Participants will be divided into groups of about six people and will introduce themselves and their research in three to four minutes.
The groups will be mixed up several times, so please enjoy interacting with various researchers.
Participants will be notified of the details of how to create self-introduction cards after the registration deadline.
Group Work (Language: Japanese/English)
Let's propose interdisciplinary collaborative research!
In group work, researchers with different strengths will form groups and propose joint research projects.
The National Institutes of Natural Sciences offers research grants to young researchers affiliated with the organization. Participants can also aim to create realistic proposals for these grants.
The best proposal will be chosen by a participant's vote.
Through the interim presentations, let's explore the feasibility of our proposals and prepare for the final presentation.
Presentations will be given using PowerPoint, but groups that have time should also try writing a grant application.
Please note that the Best Proposal Award is not connected to the research grant review process at the National Institute of Natural Sciences.
