SiteKit provides the content management system for a number of NIHR Websites, including the NIHR website and Journals Library. SiteKit provide the following statement, confirming the provision of tools to create a WCAG AA compliant website:

Typically sites powered by Sitekit CMS comprise a combination of both auto-generated and bespoke code. Bespoke code is written in the form of Content, Layout and Style templates which are often complemented by supporting JavaScript and XSL files. These templates are usually created based on a formal design or brand guidelines and allow a site developer great flexibility in the visual appearance and user experience of a site. Proprietary syntax can be added within content and layout templates which allows Sitekit CMS to present dynamically generated features with pre-defined code – typical examples include navigation, breadcrumb and editable content areas.

The auto-generated Sitekit CMS code is regularly reviewed to ensure conformity with both HTML standards and accessibility requirements. Any issues found are referred to the CMS development team where they are prioritised and resolved. On rare occasions where issues cannot be resolved, alternative equivalent functionality is available.

Bespoke template code created by Sitekit on behalf of clients is tested for accessibility prior to handover and wherever the design allows it is expected to pass WCAG AA requirements as a minimum. Where limitations of the design may have a negative impact on accessibility requirements these are typically outlined to the client with suggested resolutions included.

When third-party designs are supplied (in the case of NIHR), Sitekit endeavour to review the design prior to implementation with the intention of highlighting potential issues in areas such as colour contrast, text size and user experience. For templates created by other site developers, either on behalf of a site owner or in their role within a client organisation”

In summary, SiteKit provide the appropriate tools to create a fully accessible website, and the content added to the site is of significant importance.
