Acknowledging NIHR
Why is this important?
NIHR BRCs are a key part of the translational research landscape in the UK. Acknowledging NIHR support helps raise the profile of BRCs, ensures NIHR support is transparent to all and helps NIHR to track the impact of its research, enabling it to evidence the value of research funding.
A statement should be incorporated within the acknowledgements of publications and other
disseminations of research results following studies undertaken at the BRC:
Instances where the research received majority funding from the BRC
Acknowledgement and disclaimer for NIHR research at the BRC:
“This study/research is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Exeter Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the NIHR or the Department of Health and Social Care.”
Please also acknowledge any other NIHR support the research may have received.
Instances where the research was funded by another funder but delivered through the BRC
Statement (including funder and disclaimer):
“[Research funder statement] This study has been delivered through the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Exeter Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the [name of the research funder], the NIHR or the Department of Health and Social Care.”
Please also acknowledge any other NIHR support the research may have received, for example, through a research programme award.
Minimum statement to be used in instances where there are funder details and / or word count restrictions AND the research was funded by another funder but delivered through the BRC
Acknowledgement only (for use within a broader set of acknowledgements/disclaimers):
“The research was carried out at the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Exeter Biomedical Research Centre (BRC).”
All written and oral research outputs must acknowledge the NIHR funding or support in full.
We are required by the NIHR to provide information on all research publications and projects produced by BRC-supported staff and students and are audited on the information provided.
What is a research output?
A research output is any item arising from NIHR-funded research that enters the public domain. The NIHR takes a broad definition of what constitutes a research output, including:
Publications, for example research papers and abstracts, conference papers, research reports, books or book chapters
Engagement activity based outputs, for example talks or presentations, magazine or newsletter pieces (print or online), media interviews or press releases
Policy, practice, patients and the public outputs, such as policy documents and participant materials
Research databases and models
Intellectual property
