Jamie has been a nurse for 15 years working in a variety of settings from Medical Assessment Units to Surgical Admissions and Neuro ICU before starting as a Research Nurse in Infectious Diseases in 2011. In 2014 Jamie was appointed as the Senior Research Nurse for the Infectious Diseases team at Leeds Teaching Hospital.
Since this position Jamie moved into various leadership roles alongside facilitating Good Clinical Practice training and actively delivering research. In 2020 Jamie was asked to lead a COVID-19 research team and was appointed to a Lead Nurse role covering both inpatient research and Vaccination trials. These were conducted in non-hospital environments. “This was a challenging time for me and the team. We learnt a lot about ourselves in terms of resilience and how our behaviour can really shape the participants’ experience of research.”
Jamie started as the ART Lead Nurse in March 2022. “This is the perfect role for me and the natural follow-on from the COVID work I have been doing. I am passionate about leadership and research. I want to make research really accessible to participants, engage with communities, work with our community partners to shape future research and contribute to improving the region's health"
Carla graduated with a Bachelor of Nursing degree in 1992 before qualifying as a Midwife in 1994, followed by a Master’s Degree in Public Health in 1999 at The Nuffield Institute for Health. She developed her clinical skills as a Senior Midwife then as a Senior Nurse, together with her research delivery skills over the past 30 years and now leads the Agile Research Team within Humber & North Yorkshire ICS.
Carla has experience of delivering complex international CTIMP studies and device trials involving high risk pregnant women, adults and children across a wide range of specialities from Reproductive Health to Multiple Long Term Conditions. She is a GCP facilitator in both the primary and secondary care setting and has an interest in engaging and supporting health professionals with an interest in research to improve the health outcomes of our local population.
Sarah qualified with a BSc in Adult Nursing from the University of Hull in January 2008 and then went on to gain an MSc in Health Professional Studies in 2012. She started her nursing career as a Staff nurse in trauma and orthopaedics, but moved into clinical research, where Sarah has worked for the past 10 years. During her time in research she has continued her professional development including a range of research related training as well as the NIHR Advanced Leadership Programme and an ILM Leadership and Management qualification. Sarah manages a caseload of NIHR portfolio clinical trials, working with PIs, CIs and study teams in both secondary care and primary care. Her responsibilities also include undertaking clinical procedures and obtaining clinical specimens from trial participants. Sarah regularly provides mentoring and teaching, including, using and teaching of digital technologies such as EDGE. She also assists with clinical trial authorisation, ethics and the research governance approval process, as well as managing seven CRN funded “clusters” of GP practices within Hull and the East Riding. She acts as the study lead for portfolio studies, working closely with study teams to identify sites across the Yorkshire and Humber region. Her research experience includes orthopaedics, paediatrics, neurology, tissue viability, neurosurgery, interventional cardiology, gynaecology, stroke, primary care, rheumatology and obstetrics.
Tom has worked in clinical research for over 10 years originally working for the CRN: Yorkshire and Humber in the Generic Research Team at York Hospital. There he worked on 29 studies across secondary and primary care as a clinical trials assistant.
Prior to joining the ART Team, Tom worked for the Clinical Trials Research Unit at the University of Leeds working mainly on CTIMP studies for the gastrointestinal portfolio as a Trial Coordinator. His most recent study was a phase-3 multi centre double blind RCT which involved him setting up over 50 GP practices to the study across 3 different CRN networks in West Yorkshire, West of England and Wessex.
Tom is looking forward to engaging, promoting and encouraging research across primary care and social care sites around Humber & North Yorkshire ICS.
Charlotte Qualified with a Bachelor in Medical Science with Honours in Nursing Studies, as a Children’s Nurse in 1999, at the University of Sheffield. Charlotte started her career as a staff nurse at Sheffield Children’s Hospital on an acute medical ward looking after children from 0 to 2 years of age. She then moved to the Jessop Wing Hospital and specialised as a neonatal nurse. She then worked within the area of neonatal intensive care for many years. She then moved into the corporate sector as an ‘clinical education specialist’ working across many NHS Trusts facilitating and managing each trusts clinical education requirements. She then moved into ‘Research’ where she worked as a ‘Paediatric Diabetes Research Nurse’ for Frimley NHS Trust. Once Charlotte moved back into research she worked for the SHaR PCN as a ‘research nurse’, before her move across to the CRN for Yorkshire and Humber.
Charlotte has a wealth of Knowledge within children’s and neonatal nursing, as well as within Education, Drug Therapy and Childhood Health. She is really looking forward to joining the Team as an ‘Agile Research Nurse, where she is hoping to utilise her skills within each specialist area within the field of Research. She is ambitious and driven and looks forward to supporting the delivery of research within the CRN for Yorkshire and Humber
Karolina is currently working as a Research Nurse for Eastern European communities. She’s based in Hull, but she covers wide area of Humber & North Yorkshire ICS. She has got strong relationship with local polish community which makes her the right person for this role.
Karolina qualified as a nurse in 2012. She has also completed her master’s in nursing in 2014. For most of her nursing career, Karolina has worked in operating theatres as an anaesthetic and scrub nurse, specialising in vascular surgery. Her current role is a career pivot, but she is very enthusiastic and quick learner. She also believes that her role can make a big difference to the Eastern European community living in the UK.
Laura Qualified with Diploma Adult Nursing in 2009 at the University of York. She then graduated with her BSc Honours in 2018 at University of York. Laura Started her career as a staff nurse in surgery and critical care, had time working on the Day surgery unit/ Ophthalmology department both at Scunthorpe General Hospital and Goole District Hospital. For the last 8 years Laura has worked in a busy GP surgery as a practice Nurse, she has a good wealth of knowledge and skills in managing patients with various different chronic diseases. In her previous role she was also the Research Nurse for the practice working on 15 various Non-CTIMP studies.
Laura is really looking forward to her new role as research engagement nurse, she has a keen drive to promote research and looks forward to supporting the delivery of research studies in her area.
Sally qualified as a Nurse in 2003 and has a background in acute medical care, mainly working on a medical admissions ward. She worked on a project at York Hospital Trust implementing a bespoke electronic prescribing system before starting her career in research. Sally started working for the National Institute for Health Research in 2017 and although she has worked on secondary care studies, her main area of research has been in primary care and community sites such as care homes. Sally has an interest in quality and improvement and governance and in delivering research in non-NHS sites and developing governance within these areas.
Helen has been working as a nurse for 25 years. She has a BA (Hons) in Social Policy and Administration, a Diploma in Management and is currently undertaking the Advanced Leadership Programme through the National Institute of Health Research. Helen is involved with 17 practices in Harrogate and Rural District CCG, supporting and working alongside two cluster leads delivering studies in primary care and care homes. She also works with Harrogate District Foundation Trust (HDFT) on the Hero study and identifying PIC sites for diabetes and dermatology studies in the area. Helen’s nursing and professional experience includes: male urology, medical wards, mixed surgical wards, Clinical Audit Facilitator, Clinical Audit Development Manager in Primary care, Commissioning, School Nurse. She has worked in research for four years, and has delivered studies in primary care and care homes, as well as setting up and working alongside two clusters and one start-up practice. Her specialisms include: mental health, diabetes, care homes and cardiac. Helen is also a GCP facilitator and was shortlisted for Nursing Times Award 2019 - Research is for all - Collaboration is the key.
Katharine qualified in Adult Nursing in 2010 from the University of Leeds. Having a keen interest in health and disease she previously gained a BSc and a Research Master’s degree in Microbiology and Immunology. Throughout her nursing career Katharine has worked in a wide variety of clinical settings including Thoracic Surgery, Older Adult Stroke Rehab and as a Triage Clinician based within a Community District Nursing and Therapy team. She began working as a Research Nurse in 2012 and has gained experience in delivering and managing clinical trials in the specialities of Renal Medicine, Microbiology and Oncology.
Katharine joined the Yorkshire & Humber CRN in 2021 with the Study Support Service and has returned to nursing practice as a Research Engagement Nurse with the West Yorkshire ART team. Katharine is an active member of the Ethnic Minorities Research Inclusion (EMRI) group acting to increase levels of participation in health research within Ethnic Minority communities throughout Yorkshire and Humber through positive engagement and support.
Rima graduated in 2001 with BA (Hons) Health Studies. Working within the NHS since 2004, Rima started on her research career within the administrative level.
During many changes in her career, within the healthcare and external posts, Rima finally embarked on her MSc in Integrative Healthcare and a clinical role as a Senior Clinical Research Practitioner at Manchester Foundation Trust (MFT, 2016).
During her time at MFT, Rima passed her MSc (in 2018) which had research modules combined with Complementary Therapies and developed professionally within the Gynaecology research field. The role involved recruiting participants to Gynaecology oncology studies, some of which were published.
After moving to Bradford during Summer of 2021, Rima joined the NIHR CRN ART in July 2022 as a Clinical Research Practitioner and in July 2023 became successful to join as a Research Engagement Officer within the same team.
Hanson has been a nurse for almost 10 years with local and overseas experience in emergency, acute medical/ surgical nursing, and corporate/managed healthcare management. He also has a Masters Degree in Healthcare Management from Northumbria University in 2020.
Hanson joined the ART team in Jan 2023 moving from the A&E Department at St James Hospital, Leeds Teaching Hospital. Hanson has a passion for clinical improvement and improved healthcare service delivery which has motivated him to pursue a career in clinical research and consequently join the ART team. He is enthusiastic to work with his peers and develop his skills in research.
Michael joined the CRN in late 2020 as an ART Administrator having spent the previous four years traveling Asia and Oceania. After developing his research skills and experience he became a Support Officer in the team in December 2021, with the experience and skills he has now developed into a Band 5 CRP role in 2024.
Michael has a strong admin background having worked in public sector organisations both in the UK and abroad including time with NHS England working in organisational development and research.
Joanna completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology at University of Leeds, with a particular interest in Criminological Psychology and she spent a year in industry with Bradford's Institute for Health Research with the Patient Quality and Safety Research Team as a Research and Implementation Assistant.
Joanna joined the team in September 2022 after having just finished her Masters in Social Research at University of Leeds, with a particular interest in gender and policy creation to reduce inequalities. She is excited to be part of such a dynamic team with a varied focus on both health and social care, in line with the variety of her previous research areas. With all the experience Joanna has gained she has now used her skills to become a health and social clinical research practitioner.
Mihaela has joined the healthcare sector since the beginning of 2022, and in her previous role worked as a Clinical Trial Assistant at Bradford Teaching hospital. Mihaela was part of a small cross-speciality team and has within the Infectious Diseases, Stroke, ICU and Cardiology research teams.
Mihaela is excited to be part of such a dynamic and diverse team and is looking forward to the change, learning about Primary care research and expanding my knowledge.
Sana joined the Agile Research Team in January 2022 after working in ICU. She completed an apprenticeship within ICU and stayed there for just over 2 years.
Being in the ART team is a massive change from what she is used to but she is looking forward to it and the new challenges. Sana is based in Leeds and will be providing trial admin and assisting across the whole Agile Research Team providing a wide range of support to her colleagues region.
Scott has been a Registered Nurse for 22 years working in Vascular Surgery, Chronic Pain Management and Research. His current role is as a Senior Research Nurse with management responsibilities for the South Yorkshire & Bassetlaw Agile Team of research delivery staff. He has worked in research for 9 years and has undertaken studies in Breast, Lung, Colorectal and Prostate Cancer, including both commercial and non-commercial trials. Scott has professional interests in breast cancer, chronic pain management and hypnotherapy.
Janet Field entered the nursing profession as a mature student following an eclectic early career spanning Scientific Laboratory work and Teaching roles in both Secondary Schools and Colleges of Further Education. Additionally, Janet undertook a two-year placement of voluntary work in Africa working on diverse projects that included Health Education.
After qualifying as a Nurse, Janet spent four years in Gynaecological departments, primarily on a Gynaecological Oncology (surgical) ward, during which time she gained a Master’s Degree. Subsequently, in 2010, Janet entered the Research Nurse specialisation and her portfolio of studies, both commercial and non-commercial, encompass Diabetes, Mental Health, Paediatric Anaesthetics, Physiotherapy and Gastroenterology topics.
With eleven years’ experience in research, Mark’s role predominately focuses around the setting-up and delivery of a portfolio of research topics across Primary Care. Principal duties comprise early engagement, training of practice staff, assessing feasibility and delivery of research protocols. Mark is also a registered Clinical Research Practitioner (CRP) with the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS), with his specialism being Primary Care.
Mark's research experience includes involvement in studies in schizophrenia, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and frailty. In addition to his research experience, Mark has previously undertaken roles as a clinical lecturer and as a clinical physiologist within both the NHS and private sectors.
Julie joined the ART in July 2023. Having qualified with a BA in Nursing Studies from Sheffield Hallam University in 1999, she has over 23 years of varied nursing experience. Having started her career in general surgery she then spent a number of years working in critical care settings, both in Sheffield and Northamptonshire.
On returning to Yorkshire in 2006 Julie moved into Primary Care. As a practice nurse she specialised in childhood immunisations and travel health. Prior to starting her research career she has spent the past 10 years working in the criminal justice system as a Forensic Nurse Examiner.
In pursuing a career in research Julie is particularly interested in undertaking primary care research addressing health inequalities.
Lisa has been a nurse for 20 years, starting her career on medical assessment unit and acute medical wards with Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Trust. Her medical specialities include Cardiology, Respiratory, Diabetes and Elderly Rehabilitation, as well as Day Surgery and Theatre Recovery at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.
Prior to joining the CRN, Lisa spent a year working in the CRF at Sheffield supporting clinical research trials for the development of Covid19 vaccines, and cardiology CTIMP studies.
Her qualifications include BSc (Hons) in Nursing Studies, Advanced Diploma in Administrative Management, ILM Leadership qualification and Mentor Preparations for the Health Professionals.
Hafeezan is currently working as a Research Nurse for the South Asian Community, a completely new role which has been created to cater the needs of the South Asian community and engage them in a meaningful way.
Hafeezan qualified as a nurse in 1999, has mainly worked in tertiary care setting medical and surgical areas, predominantly in cardiac medicine and Gastroenterology. She completed her Masters in Public Health in 2011 from ScHARR, and has undertaken volunteer roles as a data collecting agent especially with Sheffield Hallam University research in 2013.
Hafeezan is a social and human rights activist, and has been actively involved in ethnic women's' forums like, Bangali women’s forum, international Sindhi Women organisations, and Pakistani groups and is very keen to learn new innovative ways to engage the South Asian community in research and to play a vital role as a key worker.
Mayeth Kent's nursing career spans a multi-disciplinary range of specialisations undertaken across an international employment portfolio. Joining the NHS in 2005, Mayeth built upon her experience gained in both The Philippines and The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and was employed as a Haemodialysis and Kidney Transplant Nurse.
In 2017, Mayeth entered the Research Nurse specialisation and has since been involved in both Commercial and Non-Commercial studies across are broad spectrum of topics which includes, Oncology-Breast, Lung, Myeloma, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Bowel, Neurology, Multiple Sclerosis, Dementia and Renal.
Louise has a background in academic research and completed her PhD in Cultural Studies in 2020. Her doctoral research explored how ‘the abject’ and ‘the grotesque’ intersect in the depiction of benefits claimants – who are reconstructed as “benefits scroungers” – within contemporary British documentary television. Louise was particularly interested in how social inequalities are deepened by pervasive pop cultural constructions and neoliberal political ideology. Alongside completing her PhD, Louise lectured in Media and Communications at Sheffield Hallam University – first as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, and then as an Associate Lecturer – from 2014 to 2021. Louise has also presented her research at conferences and has had her work published in academic edited collections.
Louise pursued a change in career in order to explore research in different contexts: particularly wanting to contribute to research that aims to have more of a direct impact on reducing social inequalities. She joined the Agile Research Team in August 2022, having most recently worked in administrative roles within the NHS. Louise is excited to be involved with collaborative research in health and social care settings, especially research that aligns with her interest in the relationship between social and health inequalities.
Prior to joining the CRN in October 2023, Matthew had worked in various private sectors, including medical science and hospitality business management.
Matthew had completed a Masters in Molecular Medicine at the University of Sheffield in 2021, with an emphasis on Infection and Immunology. During this time Matthew completed a research project assessing and optimising a new research model for Streptococcus pyogenes. Matthew then put this knowledge into practice when he began working in a private sector laboratory specialising in Sexual Health testing and research.
Matthew completed a BSc in Natural Sciences with the Open University in 2019, specialising in Chemistry completing a dissertation relating to the biochemistry of antibiotics. Completing further modules in Public Health led Matthew to become interested in health related research, thereby resulting in his interest to pursue this area as a career.
Jen graduated in Human Biology Bsc from Sheffield Hallam in May 2020
She has previously worked for NHS 111 call handling and most recently in an administrative role for clinical trials in the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. Jen is excited to see another side to the running of clinical trials in this role in the ART team as a support officer
