The wider team is divided into 4 smaller teams, each covering a region of the West Midlands and line managed by a Senior Research Nurse.
Senior Research Nurse

Yasmin Hussain is a registered nurse with many years experience, working in Oncology Nursing for Head & Neck, Lung and Upper GI for the majority of these years. Research experience includes working on large Academic and Commercial trials, right from study set-up, recruitment,follow-up, close of study and archiving. Yasmin then became a Lead Research Nurse and was responsible for delivering a balanced portfolio of studies for Oncology/Haematology Consultants. Since moving to the CRN WM in February 2017 as Senior Research Nurse Yasmin has continued to work in Oncology and Haematology Academic/Commercial Studies in hospital settings. She Line Manages the North research nurse team whilst also maintaining her own research experience in Cancer Studies.
Research Nurse
Helen Parker is a general nurse with experience of adult nursing in a surgical and orthopaedic setting. After completing paediatric training in 1989 Helen has worked on various children wards including acutely ill children with complex healthcare needs. As a paediatric research nurse since 2013 Helen has worked on many children’s studies covering different specialities, fulfilling the role of Lead Nurse on many of the studies across the North West Midlands.

Jayne Rankin has worked as a qualified nurse for over twenty years in a variety of clinical setting, both in the NHS and private sector. Jayne has worked as a research nurse for six years of this time working on commercial and non commercial clinical trials within gastroenterology, diabetes, hepatology, palliative care, orthopaedics, prostate cancer, ophthalmology and HIV.

Emily Eaton has been qualified as an adult nurse for over 6 years and spent most of her career working in an A&E setting at both RWH and QEHB. Having started working in research a couple years ago with the inherited metabolic diseases team at QEHB, she recently started working for the CRN as a generic research nurse.
Research Nurse
Karen Townshend has a primary care background working as a district nurse and practice nurse. Having joined the CRN as a research nurse in 2011, Karen has delivered research studies in primary care, care homes, community settings including patient homes, out-patients and hospices for palliative care research studies. Karen has a keen interest to facilitate palliative care research (long-term conditions) into care homes and promote community-led research by working collaboratively with AHPs and other health/social care providers. She is particularly interested in research in long term conditions, dementia and palliative care.
Research Nurse
Alison Bland after qualifying, gained her general medical ward experience, and then moved to the cardiology unit at the Glenfield Hospital, Leicester (a regional centre for cardiac patients). After gaining broad clinical experience in cardiac nursing (including interventional cardiology, cardiac ITU, cardiac surgery and cardiac rehab) as a Sister/ Web nurse, Alison became a Research Sister. Firstly at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton working in cancer research, and at the Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley and Manor Hospital in Walsall as a cancer research nurse. Having worked predominantly in lung and breast cancer Alison also has experience of urology, gynaecology and haematology trials. Since joining the CRN she has worked at Queen’s Hospital, Burton-On-Trent in oncology, general surgery and cardiology studies. At present Alison is working within the generic team at UHNM on diagnostic studies in dermatology (for malignant melanoma) and lung cancer; also on other dermatology, gastroenterology, respiratory and vascular studies as required. Alison has experience in both academic and commercial studies and has been involved in the setup of studies.

Clinical Research Project Assistant
Fran Hurford is a Clinical Research Project Assistant with more than 8 years experience as a Data Coordinator. Fran has recently started work for the Clinical Research Network West Midlands after previously working with generic, paediatric and reproductive health research teams based at The Princess Royal Hospital in Telford. She has worked on both commercial and academic trials providing support with site file maintenance, SIV, patient screening, CRF completion, data entry, data queries, monitoring visits, archiving and communicating with patients and GPs.

Senior Research Nurse

Kelly Hollier is a Senior Research Nurse from the West Midlands Clinical Research Network. She qualified in 2006 and worked predominantly in Critical Care, before joining the research network in 2013. As part of her daily role she coordinates a team of nurses who provide cross divisional cover to the West Midlands region. As well as managing a team, Kelly enjoys working on a wide range of specialities within research, her research background being principally in Renal and Surgical studies. Kelly completed a 9 month secondment to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, where she was responsible for the set up and delivery of a surgical research service. In 2017 Kelly launched the ACROSS System as part of the NIHR Advanced Leadership Programme. Aside from a love of research, Kelly’s passion lies with project management, leadership, innovation, and engagement with digital technology.
Research Nurse
Victoria Hardy has been a nurse for over 10 years, working across a mixture of both surgical and medical specialities and critical care. From critical care Victoria moved into research nursing and has worked within the CRN since 2013. During this time she has supported studies in both primary and secondary care and a variety of healthcare specialities. She has undertaken secondments with Birmingham Community Healthcare Trust as a Lead Nurse and with the CRN Workforce Development team as a peripatetic trainer. Since 2018, Victoria has worked as a Research Engagement Facilitator and led on a project to increase doctor involvement in research.

David Tyrrell qualified as a nurse in 2007. He has experience in critical care, with 2 years experience as a charge nurse. In 2015 he began working for the CRN West Midlands as a research nurse and has worked on a range of studies. David has a passion for clinical education as well as an interest in providing fair and equitable access to research for all.

Kaytie Webley has a number of years experience as a registered nurse working on both ward areas as well as within an emergency department. Kaytie has worked as a research nurse since February 2017. In this time she has had multiple placement at Heart of England NHS Trust and UHCW, where she had been involved in a variety of different trials. From her time there, she has been exposed to midwifery, vascular, surgical, oncology & haematology studies.
Research Nurse
Mohamed Mooradun qualified as an adult nurse in 2001. He spent his early career in the high dependency unit and later worked in intensive care, during which he obtained a BSc in Critical Care Nursing. Mohamed had accrued seventeen years of critical care nursing experience, including undertaking senior roles, prior to joining the CRN WM in July 2018. He decided to join the network to develop his keen interest in research, and to contribute to improving care delivery and patient outcomes across a range of specialities.

Jade Monk is a conscientious and passionate Registered Nurse currently specialising in all areas of research for the Clinical Research Network to ensure the delivery of high quality, individualised patient care. Her past experience has involved specialising in all aspects of intravenous therapy including care and management of central venous catheters (CVC), injection of subcutaneous chemotherapy, disconnection of cytotoxic pumps, intravenous antibiotics in the community and respiratory medicine.

Research Nurse
Sophie Moore qualified in Adult Nursing in 2003, and has worked in a variety of specialisms, including Elderly care, Respiratory, Gastro-Intestinal surgery and Liver medicine and surgery. It has also included Cruise Ship Nursing, working in a small emergency team, taking care of the needs of passengers and crew while at sea. Most of her nursing career though has been in Intensive Care where she has achieved a BSc in Hepatology and Adult Critical Care, worked as a Clinical Educator and progressed to a Band 6 Sister since 2013. Research has always been an interest though and Sophie joined the Network in 2020, looking forward to working in the challenging area of Clinical Research Delivery.

Sharon Kempson is a senior research nurse with over 10 years research experience. Prior to this role Sharon was a renal dialysis nurse. Having moved into research Sharon became an adult generic research nurse supporting renal, diabetes, respiratory and cardiac speciality research studies. After helping to build and develop a successful research portfolio of gynaecology and paediatric studies. Sharon moved to the NIHR CRN to continue work to deliver clinical research in the NHS across the West Midlands region. Sharon is also a GCP facilitator.

Kate Cotter is a nurse with over 25 years of experience in Paediatric Nursing and has contributed to the care of children within various hospital settings. Since 2014 she has also been involved in clinical research, working with many different specialities in order to deliver a wide variety of research studies, from observational studies to clinical trials, including a phase 1 “first paediatric patient in the world” trial.

Priscilla Mhembere has been RGN over 15 years four of which have been as a research nurse covering women's and children's studies as well as generic studies .

Herika Willis is a nurse with over seven years experience, working within care of the elderly, neonates and renal specialty as a dialysis nurse. Over the past two years she has been involved in clinical research, working on numerous studies that cover several specialties these include paediatrics, Oncology, Renal, Reproductive Health and Gastroenterology.

Steve Hurdowar joined the Stroke Research Network,(SRN), in January 2010 and recruited onto Stroke trials only up until 2018. By 2014 the SRN had been replaced by the National Institute of Health Research, Clinical Research Network, which phased in a change such that research nurses were recruiting on to a number of different trials in different disciplines.
From this change, I have recruited in other areas such as paediatrics/ neonates and mental health.
Clinical Research Project Assistant
Usman Janjua is a Clinical Research Project Assistant with more than 2 years’ experience as a Data manager. Usman started working for the Clinical Research Network West Midlands in April 2018. He previously worked with a research team based at the Queen Elizabeth hospital, specialising in oncology and covering a variety of different clinical trials. Usman has experience working on both commercial and academic trials and his work actively aids recruitment. Since joining the network, Usman has supported many different hospitals in central Birmingham with Data entry, Site file maintenance, Archiving, SIV, monitoring visits, data queries, completing CRF, contacting patients/GP. Usman was also chosen for the network ‘rising star’ award at CRN Staff Award in December 2018.

Genoviate Kuliesuite has been a qualified general nurse for 6 years. She has got experience in ophthalmology having worked as an Ophthalmic Nurse Practitioner for the last 2.5 years. She has worked closely with patients with Diabetes. She has joined CRN West Midlands Team 2 as a Research Nurse on the 29 th of June 2020.

Sarah Read qualified as an adult nurse in 2006. She spent the following 9 years working in an acute ward setting, primarily working with older adults with dementia. For the last 4 years Sarah has been community based carrying out assessments for adults with complex health needs. Sarah joined the CRN in September 2019 as a generic research nurse.

Wendy Osborne qualified as a Paediatric Nurse in 2015 and worked in the Emergency Department at Birmingham Children’s Hospital before qualifying as a Health Visitor in 2017. She joined the Clinical Research Network in April 2020.
Clinical Research Project Assistant
Taridzo Mazenenga is a Clinical Research Project Assistant with more than 3 years of experience working in clinical research. She works to support clinical research staff across multiple work-streams and will be based across different organisations in the CRN West Midlands. She has experience working both commercial and non-commercial studies, qualitative and quantitative projects and CTIMP and non CTIMP trials. Previously working at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, she was overseeing the recruitment of patients to two Rare Disease Registries, one local and one national at the first Rare Disease Centre for Children in the United Kingdom.

Senior Research Nurse

Terry Martin has over 30 years of nursing experience in a variety of healthcare settings including theatres. Based within Worcester Acute NHS Trust Terry has played a key role in encouraging new research activity across several hospital sites including Kidderminster, Redditch, Bromsgrove, Malvern and Evesham.
Terry manages a small team of generic nurses who have actively recruited to studies in genetics in MS, PD studies, ITU, Surgery, Ophthalmology and more recently Palliative care.

Indy Atwal has been a qualified paediatric nurse since 2004, caring for neonates, children, young people and families in surgical, medical and emergency care settings.
Indy enjoys meeting and working with new clinical teams and is able to adapt to different clinical areas to set-up, plan research care pathways and deliver clinical trials.
