C&C stands for "Capacity and Capability" and this is the term often used to describe the process used by NHS Trust R&D departments to assess, arrange and confirm (AAC) whether they are able to run a study on their premises. The AAC process is a comprehensive review of resources, discussions with relevant support departments and a localised review of costs and agreements.
Following requests for study set up support from a number of NHS Trusts, the CRN WM set up the C&C pilot which has been running since June 2018. The pilot offers remote C&C support for R&D Teams from an experienced CRN Research Facilitator.

If the support you require is not listed here you can still make a request and specify the support you need. We will review and assess on a case by case basis.
You can request support from the CRN WM C&C Team by completing and submitting the “Initial Request Form” which can be accessed by clicking the button below;
Before you begin, it’s worth considering the requesting conditions below;
The majority of the support will be provided remotely; CRN C&C staff will not be based in the Organisation (we hope you will agree that some valuable time will be saved here, no travel means more hours to dedicate)
CRN C&C Staff to work only on portfolio research
CRN C&C Staff will need full access to all appropriate SOPs and IT systems to fulfil the role effectively; this together with a letter of access will need to be in place before C&C staff can begin working with your organisation
Single point of contact within your Organisation must be nominated with whom C&C staff can liaise directly
If you are unable to meet these conditions please do not hesitate to still complete the “Initial Request Form” as we will discuss all requests on a case by case basis.
The CRN Study Support Manager or equivalent will review the submitted request and have a discussion with CRN C&C staff to see if the request is manageable in light of other commitments.
You will then receive an acknowledgement email followed by an arranged telephone conversation to discuss your request in more detail.
At this stage additional information may be requested to clarify the support required.
Requested support will be agreed or declined. If it is declined a reason will be given and further discussion can continue. This does not prevent you from re-applying for C&C Support.
Start and end date for support will be agreed and the terms documented in a contract letter
CRN C&C Staff will provide Pre Engagement Checks documentation
CRN C&C Staff Member will liaise with the nominated point of contact and begin supporting remotely!
CRN C&C Staff will communicate and update regularly with the nominated point of contact
You will need to provide a letter of access for the named CRN C&C Staff Member
You will need to provide appropriate IT access in order for CRN C&C Staff to work remotely
You will need to provide access to SOPs for CRN C&C Staff to follow
You will need to provide a nominated person to act as a single point of contact within your organisation that CRN C&C Staff will liaise with

100% of Trusts who completed the pilot said it was successful in achieving the aim
50% of Trusts expect to make changes to their processes as a result of shared good practice.
50% of Trusts needed support in entering data within EDGE and noted this to be the most useful aspect of the pilot

We look forward to working with you and receiving your support request.

"We have been very pleased to receive support from the C&C Pilot to help us during a period of prolonged staff absence. The initial application was very straightforward, and having discussed our needs with the Pilot team, we have had Facilitator support for processing amendments, staff training, and study set up. A contract has been used to clearly articulate arrangements between CRNWM and the Trust so that everyone knows what the expectation is.
The Facilitators have a point of contact within the Trust to co-ordinate activities, and our experience has been that communication is excellent. The Facilitators are very experienced, and have provided a seamless and timely service. I had some initial concerns about support being provided remotely, but I am pleased to say that these have been proved to be completely unfounded. I would have no hesitation in recommending the service to other Trusts who might be thinking about using it."
Anna Walker, Assistant Research Manager, Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust
“ CRN (C&C) support from Shelley Grant – R&D Russells Hall have had assistance on a few occasions from the CRN with amendments processing and setting up of studies – we have found the help invaluable as we had staff shortages within the department so until we were up to full staff compliment we handed this task to Shelley. On this most recent occasion it ran really smoothly although Shelley worked remotely she kept in constant contact with the team and we shared a spreadsheet that we could both update and add to so we were all up to date with the amendments being processed. We would encourage other trusts to be a part of this project and to utilise the help being offered from the CRN”
Claire Phillips, Research & Development Manager and Lesley Jones, Research Support Officer, The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust
