The winter session will begin on January 8 and end on March 14. Enrollment will open on November 20 at 6:30 p.m. Space in our classes is limited, so we urge you to register promptly. Fall workshop descriptions are below.

Mondays
Monday workshops will meet for 8 sessions on the following dates:

BOOK CLUB: BABY-SITTERS FROM PAGE TO SCREEN
Ms. Westman
Classes III-IV (maximum of 14)

Are you most like Kristy, Claudia, Mary Anne, Stacey, or Dawn? Find out in this deep dive into all things Baby-Sitters Club. We'll read selections from the original Ann M. Martin chapter books & graphic novelizations and compare them to clips from the TV series, considering how the stories have changed over time for a new generation of readers. We'll use our expertise about the series to adapt selections into our own comics, short stories, or short plays. Every session will include time to read from the Baby-Sitters Club series or read-alikes curated by Ms. Westman.
CREATIVE COOKS

Young chefs, tempt your taste buds with fresh seasonal ingredients. Students will practice mixing and measuring techniques while learning to use various kitchen tools. Every class includes new recipes, fun culinary ideas, and tasty treats—this is a delicious way to end the school day!
EXPLORATIONS IN SCULPTURE

Make awesome 3D art using a variety of media. We'll explore sculpting using modeling clay, wooden sticks, wire, plaster cloth, natural objects, cardboard, as well as some non-traditional materials. Some projects include: kinetic sculptures, food themes, architectural structures, and animals and their habitats.
MYTHOLOGY MAGIC

Strap wings to your shoes and come soar up to Mt. Olympus and beyond! Invent your own language for Cerberus and Bastet, tame Medusa’s snakes and ride a Pegasus. Become a mythology expert as you act out classic stories, invent your own characters and embark on quests. Improvisation, games, dance and original stories are performed at the end of the session.
ROBOT BUILDERS

Students will build, and take home, a new robot project each class! But not some boring metal thing - we’re talking whimsical robots that light up, drive, wiggle, float, spin, or do something else that kids love! STEAM learning is the core of this amazing hands-on class, but it’s the emphasis on fun and creativity that make this such a popular program.

DIGITAL DESIGN FOR PET LOVERS

In Digital Design for Pet Lovers, 3rd and 4th grade pet enthusiasts will use various tech tools to build a virtual pet, design a gadget, and create an app for their pet. Join us to hone your coding and 3D modeling skills while making fun pet-themed projects.
MAKE & WONDER: A CREATIVE ART STUDIO EXPERIENCE

Experiment with different art mediums and techniques weekly. We will create various works, from painting to printmaking; mixed media to collage; drawing; and everything in between! We will approach art projects with a whimsical, conceptual edge.

Your mini Sherlock will explore STEM, theater and design concepts by solving puzzles, cracking secret codes, and crafting gadgets and disguises, learning what it takes to be a super spy!
TUNEFUL TUESDAYS: UKELELE CLUB

This year, the Lower School Music Department is offering "Tuneful Tuesdays" - a series of musical Hobbyhorse classes for students in Class III and Class IV on Tuesday afternoons. Our winter offering is Ukulele Club (see below for more details). This will be followed by a Lower School Percussion Ensemble in the spring.
Class III and IV students are invited to join Ukulele Club this winter! Students will learn how to hold and play the ukulele, and to accompany their own singing as they play from chord charts and sing-along videos. We will learn songs by Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry and more. We will also learn about the indigenous history of the ukulele, an instrument from Hawaii, and practice performing some Hawaiian folk songs. The ukulele club will have the opportunity to perform at a LS Assembly at the end of the term.

CHESS
Top Level Chess

Come join this fun workshop—no previous knowledge of chess is necessary! Chess relies on logical thinking, spatial relations, and problem solving skills. For every child, we aim to provide a foundation in the basics and principles of sound chess play. This is done by introducing key concepts of opening, middle, and end game strategies in brief demonstrations for the entire class. This follows interactive evaluations over the board, as students play each other or work in small groups with an instructor. Further reinforcement is provided in the form of worksheets and related puzzles handed out in class. These are then reviewed and appraised by our outstanding staff of experienced instructors.
COMICS & DIGITAL ANIMATION

Learn all about film shot composition, storyboarding, and visual storytelling by making your own comic book and digital animation! Participants will improve their drawing skills through the staging and drafting of an original visual story concept they create on paper. Teachers work with students to help them understand how to use the landscape of each panel and page to create a dynamic story with a delicate balance of artwork and language. Participants will dive into drawing techniques and create original characters and personalities. Next, the comic will be translated into a digital drawing, as kids learn to bring their comic to life using Procreate! Kids will learn frame-by-frame animation and make a short animation.

We are all in this together this Winter! Come learn songs and dances based on the favorite cool movie, High School Musical! In our production our story focuses on building friendships, supporting one another and sharing our dreams. It’s time to Get your Head in the Game as we prepare for an exciting show for friends and family.

Calling all Mermaids and Pirates!
Bring your Dinglehopper and join Ariel on her magical and exciting journey from Sea to Land. Taught by the pros of the DramaZone®, classes include: singing, dancing acting and movement games all in the spirit of fun! This class ends with a show for family and friends at the end of the semester. No experience necessary and all talents welcome. Group numbers are emphasized.

THE CRAFT STUDIO: COOLEST CRAFTER

Trendy new projects, cool new techniques, something for every artist with the craft studio famous fun edge to make it the best and coolest art class around! We dive deeper and really explore our art knowledge and techniques to apply them to the coolest and trendiest crafts! Not your typical craft class, we take what is present and popular in the world and find away to “craft it”!
HIP HOP

This high-energy, fun, and engaging course is designed for students who want to explore the exciting world of hip hop dance. Throughout the program, participants will learn the fundamental techniques, styles, and movements of hip hop dance, from classic old school to contemporary trends. Students will explore a variety of dance routines to help build confidence, coordination, and rhythm while fostering a strong sense of community within the class. No previous dance experience is required to join. So, lace up your sneakers and get ready to move to the rhythm! Join us for an unforgettable hip hop dance experience that will have you grooving with style and confidence.
MINDFUL MAKERS

Each week we will be working on a sustainable and fun craft project, focusing on reusing and recycling materials. Students will get to be creative while learning about the environment. We will make our own mold & deckles, ripping scrap paper and blending into pulp together; press flowers and leaves; and carve designs in styrofoam using a pen before using the blocks to print on our recycled paper. This is a good opportunity to talk about what is and is not recyclable & prolonging the life of items destined for a landfill.
WOVEN WONDERS

We’ll explore weaving, sewing, embroidery and textile design, learning basics of fiber art with weekly creative projects that will inspire kiddos week after week!
YOGI ADVENTURES

Recenter your minds and bodies for the evening! Join us as we stretch, play, paint, and dance with our bodies. Each week, we will go on a different adventure, exploring a new yoga pose. We will begin our sessions with mindfulness to prepare us for the new pose ahead. Then we will move into our yoga practice followed by musical art. We will end with whole group story time and free choice activities to debrief from our adventure. Come springtime, our little yogis will have authored and illustrated their very own yoga books complete with pictures from each session! We can't wait to stretch it out with you!

THEATER GAMES
Child's Play
Classes K–IV (maximum of 14)

Tuition: $630
Stoke your creativity, find your funny bone, and exercise your imagination in this dynamic theater arts class. Led by professional actors from Child's Play NY, students get to play with their peers and learn new games and story-telling techniques. The class involves gross-motor workouts that warm-up the actor's instrument, followed by improv and acting technique work. Young people learn how to think on their feet, work spontaneously and give their creativity a work-out. Original stories are developed throughout the course of the session. Prioritize play and bring expressivity center stage this semester!
