A warm welcome is extended to each of you as we look forward to a new school year for 2020-2021. On behalf of the staff we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our families for entrusting your children to our care in a faith filled environment that fosters the excellence of each student through spiritual, academic and social pursuits within a Christ centred community.
There have been many updates and changes to our school both in terms of the physical building as well as the people who nurture and support your children. We have added a few new names (listed below) to our awesome group of educators. We wish to welcome all of our new St Anthony Knights’ students and I look forward to seeing all our returning Knights’ students and families.
We are excited to continue to work together with Father Mathew and Deanne at St. Mary Parish as this looks to be another amazing year at St. Anthony. I look forward to meeting all of you at our Open House on Oct. 10th.
God Bless all of you,
Ms. Spadafora
Father, your will is to gather us
As one family in yourself.
Fill our hearts with your love
And help us to work together as a community,
To grow closer to you and to one another
Through your Son, Jesus, in the Holy Spirit,
Amen

Planting Seeds of Faith as Disciples Rooted in the Mission of Christ
God plants seeds of faith in every moment of every day; although, often those seeds go unnoticed, falling on rocky ground or among the thorns. As a Catholic School community, we are blessed to learn and grow in an environment which allows seeds of faith to take root and together we can work to nurture and support those seeds as they grow.
This school year, we focus on what it means to plant seeds of faith as disciples rooted in the mission of Christ. The mission of the Church is to “Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.” We are called to plant the seed of faith everywhere we go. To proclaim the Good News and to courageously bear witness to the faith in which we believe does not come without its challenges. Jesus reminds us that we must remain connected to him, the true vine, in order to bear fruit. We must remain rooted in who we are and what our mission is as disciples of Christ.
Parents are invited to join us on Thursday, October 10 from 4-7 pm for our annual open house. We will have activities for the children, as well as hosting a vendors fair. More details will follow.
On behalf of the St. Anthony and our Catholic School Council, we can`t wait to see you then!
A copy of the Student Information Form will be sent home on Tuesday, September 3rd, 2019. (Green Form)
A copy of the Consent Form will also be sent home (Blue Form) Please read carefully so we can post pictures of your child on our Instagram and Twitter Social Media Accounts as well as the Board.
Please complete the Student Information Form and Consent form - return the form to the school by Friday, September 13th.
It is very important that we have the correct information (phone numbers and email addresses) as to where we may reach you or who you wish us to contact if you are unavailable during the school hours.
It is necessary that we have a contact number on file and that there is someone available to pick your child up when called. Please check with the emergency contact to make sure these arrangements are suitable. The emergency contact should be an alternative to parents/guardians.

A note to the teacher in their agenda is always an excellent way to communicate this change. It is very challenging at 2:50 pm to try to call parents (or to receive calls) to confirm or change dismissal plans as buses cannot be kept waiting to begin their routes home. Please be mindful that all children must ride their designated bus to and from school.

IMPORTANT SAFETY REMINDERS
In keeping with “The Safe Schools Act” and “Board Policies”, the following reminders are provided for your information:
1. Morning Supervision is provided at 8:30 a.m. with the arrival of the first bus. No students should arrive at school before 8:30 a.m.
2. Parents picking up their children after school are asked to meet them outside their exit door after the bell at 2:59 p.m.
3. All visitors, including parents, must report their presence to the office. If you are picking up your son/daughter for an appointment, he/she will be summoned to the office to meet you. If you are delivering a lunch etc., please label it and leave it on the table outside the office and we will ensure that it is delivered to your child.
4. All students are expected to remain on school property during the lunch period, with the exception of those students who walk to and from school and who would normally return home for lunch.
5. Students may leave school property during lunch in the accompaniment of a parent or guardian. In consideration of the short length of the lunch period and the safety of all students, we strongly encourage students to remain at school during lunch.
6. For information regarding the use of electronic devices at school, please see agendas. The government will be releasing further information in November 2019.
Dress Code
1. Compliance with the Standardized Dress Code Policy is a condition of registration and attendance in an elementary school within the Niagara Catholic District School Board.
2. It is the expectation that students wear the elementary standardized dress code items properly and in compliance with expectations throughout the school day and at all activities and events as representatives of the school and/or Board.
3. Alternate Dress Days will be determined by the school Principal for specific events or activities and communicated in advance to students, parents and guardians.
4. All students are expected to wear the elementary standardized dress code when on field trips unless approved by the Principal.
At all times, students should dress in a manner suitable for attendance at a Catholic elementary school. Students are asked to cooperate with these expectations. Those students who do not cooperate will be expected to make suitable changes and/or will be sent home.
We ask that Parents and Guardians review the policies outlined in the Student Handbook as a family and please sign the agenda indicating your commitment to the policies.
Thank you for your continued support.
Student Agendas are an important resource which has proven to be an invaluable tool for assisting students to plan and organize their daily schedules. Included in the Student Agenda is information regarding the Code of Conduct and general expectations. Parents and students are asked to review and sign the parent/student contract in the Agenda.
Please do not remove the signed contract.
We thank parents who donated $2 to help offset some of cost of the Agendas.
Students will be supervised in the schoolyard beginning at 8:30 a.m. with the arrival of the first bus.
Students who arrive at school after 8:45 a.m. must check in at the office for a late slip, before going to class. For the safety of students, a letter will be sent home following consecutive lates. We thank you in advance for your support and cooperation in ensuring that students arrive on time.
If your child(ren) will be absent from school or arriving late, please contact the SAFE ARRIVAL—Student Absence Reporting before the bell time for the current day please call 1-844-287-6287 or go.schoolmessenger.ca.
If you need to pick up your child(ren) before the end of the school day, please be sure to notify us in writing. Students must be signed out at the office before leaving the school property.
Our school will again be running a lunch-time mooo-marvelous milk program.
The purpose of this program is to make fresh, cold milk available to your child(ren) at lunchtime. Milk provides the kind of healthy nutrition that helps children concentrate, have more energy, and get the most out of their school day. Milk for your child(ren) will be available for purchase on a prepayment plan starting in October. Milk order forms will be sent home with your child(ren) this month.
The Niagara Catholic District School Board is pleased to formally launch Google Apps for Education for all students. Google Apps for Education is also referred to as GAFE.
The platform is cloud based and provides students with access to the same account from ELKP through to Grade 12 with unlimited storage through Google Drive, access to a word processor through Docs, spreadsheet through Sheets, presentation software Slides, email through Gmail, and a calendar. The GAFE suite also provides teachers access to Google Classroom to minimize the use of paper and give students access to classroom materials from home.
Online assistance is also available while using the GAFE tools from Synergyse. Students can access Synergyse by clicking on the Niagara Catholic logo which appears on the top right within each of the GAFE tools. Students key in their question and a very short video on the topic will appear.
A major advantage of the Google Apps for Education platform is that it is cloud based which means that students have access to the GAFE tools from anywhere regardless of the device that they are using; as well, students will also be able to access their files and collaborate online.
The Niagara Catholic District School Board believes that technology can be a powerful educational tool to help support student achievement.
One of our major focuses at school is SAFETY. In order to ensure the safety of all, staff and students will begin preparing for both our fire and lockdown practice drills. Throughout the course of the school year, we are expected to conduct 6 fire drills and 2 lockdown drills. We will be sending an email notification the second week of school for only the first fire and lock down drill that will be practiced and occur. Teachers will be discussing and practicing with all our students. We ask that you please discuss and practice with your child(ren), your home safety plan.
Our school participates in the No Child Without program which offers a free MedicAlert membership to students who attend our school and are between the ages of 4 to 14. If your child has a medical condition, allergy or is required to take medication on a regular basis, you may wish to consider a MedicAlert membership through this program. To register your child you will need a No Child Without brochure from the school office.

Reminder that all school lunches will continue to be cash online only.
New this year, starting in January, we will be asking all families to pay for field trips through cash online only as well. We will continue to provide reminders until then so please take some time to register.
Please remind your children that school is a place for learning. Expensive items such as iPods/MP3’s, game systems, video/cameras and cell phones should be left at home. It is difficult to assess blame if these are lost, go missing, or are damaged. Thank you for your cooperation and support.
If you have any concerns please feel free to write a note in the agenda or call and ask to speak to your child’s teacher before/ after school or leave a message and they will return your call as soon as possible. Often, a note or simple phone call can help to alleviate any concerns you may have with your child’s education or social interaction at school.
Every child is required to have indoor shoes that can be left at school. These should be labeled with the child’s name. Indoor shoes will be worn every day inside the classrooms. This provides for the comfort, safety and well being of our students and the cleanliness of the school.
In compliance with the Ontario Ministry of Education and Training “Safe Schools Act”, all schools are mandated to have in effect a Visitor Sign-In procedure. All visitors must sign in at the office upon entry to the school. If you are dropping off lunch please use the stickers to write your child’s name and class and leave it on the table in the front foyer.
We appreciate your continued understanding and cooperation.
There are several children with severe peanut/nut allergies who attend our school. For this reason, we require that students bring peanut/nut free lunches and snacks to school. A severe allergy to peanut products means a child could go into anaphylactic shock within minutes of exposure. We need to do all we can to ensure the safety of each of these children.
Following is a list of suggestions that you may consider when planning lunches:
· Kellogg’s NutriGrain Cereal Bars, Rice Krispie Squares: original flavour
· Christie’s cookies, Fig Newtons, Chips Ahoy, Barnum’s Animal Crackers, Teddy Grahams, please check packaging carefully.
· Peek Frean’s Family Digestives and Fruit Creams.
· Betty Crocker Dunkaroos.
· Dare products, most are nut free, check labels
· General Mills Golden Graham Treats, Crispy Graham Squares and Chewy Marshmallow.
· Nestle Smarties, Kit Kat, Aero and Coffee Crisp chocolate bars.
· Kraft Jell-O pudding snacks.
· Delmonte Rich ‘n’ Creamy pudding cups
You may send in “nut free” butters such as WOW Butter, etc., but the sandwich bag/container must be labeled as such, so that we are certain it is nut free.
Please check your child’s classroom for any additional allergies in their classroom which you will need to be aware of. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students safe.
