In the history we learn in school, we are never taught the full story. Martin Luther King Jr.'s death is not an exception. I don't know much about MLK's death except for his assassination. Reading this article made me doubt what I knew. After reading more about the conspiracy of MLK's death, I started to believe that James Earl Ray, the person who allegedly shot MLK, was not alone in his crime. Because of the FBI's previous harassment of MLK, I think that they were also involved in his death. It is great that people are still investigating the truth today. I feel awful thinking about the death of one of the most important and influential people that ever lived. I also feel grateful that people, to this day, are still empowered and influenced by his powerful words. To take action, I will inform people about the other possibility of how his death occurred and who was involved.
Many people are unaware of the difference between cultural appropriation and appreciation. I think this is due to the fact that not many people are talking about it. For example, in the “My Culture is NOT a Costume” video, it shows that people try to imitate different cultures as a costume but they don’t realize that it is negatively affecting people of that culture. I feel the same way as those girls in that video because I have seen someone from outside my culture attempting to be more Filipino but ended up just making the culture seem like a joke. I feel somewhat irritated because using a culture as a costume takes away the meaning behind the art, clothing, or tattoo. Cultural exchange should only happen if they respect and have knowledge of that culture. To take action, I will try and educate people around me about the difference between cultural appropriation and appreciation.
Feminism to me is looking at women as equally strong, if not stronger, than men. It is about promoting women’s rights and advocating their issues. From the lecture, it says that women took over the men’s job after they went off to war. This proves that women were just as capable of doing the same job as men. After the war was over, men wanted to put women back in their “place” and force them back into their stereotypical gender role. This made me feel a little frustrated. It made no sense to me that the men thought that the women were not supposed to do a “man’s job” even though women already showed them that they could. A similar example is Ulka Rowe’s situation. Rowe decided to work for Google and had many experiences that would consider her to be “level 9”. She filed a lawsuit for lost wages and violation of the Equal Pay Act. She was hired for a “level 8” role which paid “hundreds of thousands of dollars less”, but multiple men who had less experience were hired for “level 9” roles. Again, this makes me a little angry because Rowe proved that she had the skills to take on the job but was passed up by men who were less skilled just because of their sex. This has happened to many female workers in jobs that are mostly dominated by males. It is unfair to them to get paid less even though they are doing the same job as men.
Feminism is known to be the movement to gain gender equality, but what most people don’t know is that it is not true feminism at all. I say this because feminism only talks about the struggles of white, middle-class, and cisgender women. Intersectional feminism covers women in the minority groups. It is when women experience multiple types of oppression because they identify with many other categories in the target group. In an online file called Intersectional Feminism, a white feminist started the hashtag #reclaimingintersectionality2014. Although white women might experience intersectional oppression, I think that they don’t really experience as much oppression as other women who identify as someone who is a person of color. I don’t think the white feminist had anything to reclaim since she is not really part of it. In my opinion, “white” feminism isn’t true feminism because they use statistics of only white women to fight their arguments. According to the article, What is Intersectional Feminism?, “a woman makes 78 cents to a man's dollar” but “women of minority groups make even less. Black women earn 64 cents to white men's dollar and Hispanic women only earn 56 cents.” These statistics show that white women do have it worse than men, but women of the minority groups have it worse than white women. I feel that feminism should be all inclusive and not only support women who are part of the power groups.
