The Geometry domain of the CA Common Core Content Standards is about classifying geometric figures by their mathematical attributes-- not just naming shapes because they look familiar! In the earlier grades, students learn how to recognize attributes in order to sort shapes into categories. As the grades progress, students learn precise mathematical language to describe shapes as accurately as possible, such as by angle measurements or symmetry.
