The Geometry domain of the CA Common Core Content Standards is about classifying geometric figures by their mathematical attributes-- not just naming shapes because they look familiar! In the earlier grades, students learn how to recognize attributes in order to sort shapes into categories. As the grades progress, students learn precise mathematical language to describe shapes as accurately as possible, such as by angle measurements or symmetry. This expands to shapes within space in 5th grade, as students learn about the coordinate plane. In middle school and beyond, elementary skills are built upon as students learn to solve geometric problems, such as working with the Pythagorean Theorem.
