American Sign Language CLASSES

Class overview

Welcome to American Sign Language (ASL) 1, 2, 3 at JLHS. Noted as a visual language, ASL cannot be dubbed as a signed version of English. ASL has its own grammar system, syntax, and structure. This course syllabus will guide you to learn and build up conversational signing skills, and prepare you for full immersion in ASL and Deaf culture.

"As long as we have Deaf people on earth, we will have signs. It is my hope that we will all love and guard our beautiful sign language as the noblest gift God has given to Deaf people." George Veditz

About me

Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland (GO BALTIMORE RAVENS!!!), I've set my heart on becoming a teacher since high school. Partial reason for wanting to become a teacher is due to my late father, who inspired me. He was a P.E. teacher and high school basketball coach for over forty years. I graduated from Gallaudet University with a B.A. degree in English with a concentration in Secondary Education and taught English for a decade to students ranging from middle school graders to college students. I also taught ASL at a private high school, worked for a Deaf social services agency, and a telecommunications corporation serving the Deaf community. I'm currently in graduate school pursuing Masters in Teaching American Sign Language (TASL): World Languages (K-12) with University of Northern Colorado.

When I'm not planning lessons or grading assignments, I enjoy baking/cooking for family and friends, and decorating for special events. I'm happily married to James, who works as a dorm counselor at the California School for the Deaf in Fremont. Together, James and I serve as a pastoral team for Hands of Grace Deaf Church (under Family Life Christian Center) in San Jose, CA. We have three CODAs (children of Deaf Adults), including our eldest daughter who is a JLHS alum, two dogs and reside in Union City, CA.

I'm thrilled to be part of the JLHS family and teach ASL. Students, fasten your seats because we will blast off to infinity and beyond in the universe of ASL/Deaf Culture!
