Note Well:
If we do not have enough students who request particular courses, we cannot run them. If we do not have trained teachers at the start of the year to offer AP courses, we cannot run them.
The courses that are listed in course selection, are the result of both the number of course requests made by students and the likelihood of having trained teachers available to offer courses requested.
We list AP courses during the course request process each Spring when we have confidence that we will have trained teachers in place come September. Both a minimal number of requests and a trained teacher are essential to run an AP course.
We have been in a position where we have not been able to offer something that was requested due to circumstances beyond the control of the school, including the loss of a teacher to another school, district, or industry.
If an AP course receives 20 (+/-2) requests from students, it will get placed in the master schedule. We know that some of these 20 students may choose something else, and not remain in the class. We also know that additional students may request the class in September during the add/drop period.
Due to fluctuating enrollment, finite resources, and changing funding sources year-to-year, we lean on course request guidelines. This strategy gives us the best chance for full classes and a favorable impact on the entire master schedule for all students.
